As a Doctor of Nursing Practice and a Family Nurse Practitioner, I am frequently asked about GLP-1 medications. I also have twelve years of clinical experience including emergency medicine, primary care, urgent care, and seven years specializing in obesity medicine.

GLP-1 medications have changed the way we approach obesity and metabolic health. Medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide work on hormone pathways involved in appetite, fullness, blood sugar regulation, and digestion. For appropriate patients, they can be an incredibly useful medical tool, but they are not a substitute for healthy habits.

Many people who come to me are not only looking for weight loss but also support. They are managing complex demands, hormonal changes, and health concerns that build over time. Weight gain is typically multifactorial which is why guidance matters just as much as medication. One of the biggest misconceptions is that taking a GLP-1 means you can simply take medication and forget about nutrition. In reality, the best results come from combining medication with education about protein intake, food choices, portion control, physical activity, sleep, and sustainable lifestyle changes. Medication can help regulate appetite, but it cannot replace the foundational habits that support long-term health.

Another common concern is whether GLP-1 medications are just a quick fix. Obesity is a chronic disease, and treatment should be approached like treatment for other chronic conditions. Some patients may require long-term medication while others may eventually reduce or discontinue treatment under medical supervision. The important question isn’t simply, “Should I take a GLP-1?” It is, “Is this medication appropriate for me, and how can I use it as part of a comprehensive plan?”

At Medi-Weightloss, our goal is to look beyond the number on the scale and address the underlying factors affecting weight and metabolic health. Medication can be one piece of the puzzle, but education, accountability, and individualized care remain incredibly important. We sit with you, listen to your story, understand your lifestyle, and tailor your plan so it fits your life.

Whether our patients are managing stress, dealing with hormonal changes, recovering from major life transitions, or simply trying to feel like themselves again, they are never alone. We offer a team that guides them, adjusts their plan, and celebrates their progress.
