Somewhere along the way, November 1 became the unofficial beginning of Christmas.
The Halloween decorations come down, the trees go up, and suddenly the quiet corners of the house are filled with storage tubs, extension cords, wrapping paper, artificial greenery, and boxes labeled “Christmas-DO NOT CRUSH.” Before long, the calendar fills with gatherings, travel, shopping, cooking, and everything else that makes the holiday season wonderful and just a little chaotic.
Before the house gets turned upside down, fall is a great time to take care of the maintenance that can help keep it comfortable and running smoothly all winter.
In fact, while you are already pulling decorations out of the attic, garage, utility closet, or storage room, take a moment to look around. These are often the same spaces where heating equipment, water heaters, electrical panels, ductwork, or other important home systems are located.
Start With the Heating System
In West Alabama, the first cold morning can arrive before anyone expects it. That is not the ideal time to discover that your heating system is making a strange noise, producing an unusual smell, or failing to warm the house.
Turn the heat on before you truly need it and let it run long enough to make sure it is operating properly. A brief dusty smell may occur when the system runs for the first time in months. If you smell burning, see smoke, or the odor persists, turn the system off and call a professional.
Unusual sounds, short cycling, or weak airflow should also be checked.
A preventive maintenance visit can identify worn components, airflow problems, and other concerns before they become an inconvenient and potentially expensive holiday breakdown.
Replace the Filter and Check the Vents
Holiday decorating has a way of moving furniture into new places. Before putting the tree, gift table, or extra seating in position, make sure nothing is blocking a supply or return vent.
This is also a good time to replace the system’s air filter. A dirty filter can restrict airflow, make the equipment work harder, and contribute to uneven temperatures throughout the home. With more people gathering indoors during the cooler months, proper filtration and good indoor air quality become even more important.
If some rooms are always dusty, difficult to heat, or noticeably less comfortable than others, the issue could involve the ductwork rather than the heating unit itself. A professional inspection can help determine whether cleaning, sealing, or another correction may be appropriate.
Be Careful in Shared Storage Spaces
When holiday decorations and mechanical equipment share an attic, closet, or garage, leave plenty of room around the equipment. Avoid stacking boxes against heating units, water heaters, electrical panels, or ductwork. Never store flammable decorations, paper
products, paint, or household chemicals near heat producing equipment.
While you are in the space, look for visible water around the water heater, damaged ductwork, loose connections, or anything that appears out of place. Do not attempt
electrical or mechanical repairs yourself, but do make note of anything that deserves professional attention.
Think Beyond the Heating Unit
The holidays place extra demand on the entire home. Kitchens work overtime, guests use more hot water, electrical outlets power additional lights and decorations, and storms or cold weather can lead to power interruptions.
As holiday lights and decorations go up, use extension cords only as rated, avoid daisy-chaining power strips, and stop using any outlet or plug that feels warm, sparks, or
repeatedly trips a breaker.
Fall is a smart time to have concerns involving the water heater, electrical system, or standby generator addressed. If you own a generator, make sure it is professionally maintained and ready to operate before an outage—not after one begins.
Preventive maintenance may not be the most exciting part of preparing for Christmas, but neither is waking up to a cold house with company on the way.
Before the tree goes up and the seasonal chaos begins, give your home’s essential systems a little attention. A few simple checks now can help keep your family comfortable, your gatherings running smoothly, and unexpected breakdowns off the holiday schedule.
