Embrace Your Inner Athlete in 2026
The power of regular exercise can impact both your physical and your mental health, and what better way to kick off a new year than to renew your commitment to feeling your best? Starting a new exercise regimen, or continuing one you currently enjoy, can bring all kinds of benefits to your physical and mental health.
Whether you want to focus on areas such as strength, power, endurance, agility, coordination, flexibility, balance, or just know that your body is physically capable of supporting your daily life, embracing your inner athlete is easier to do than you’d think.
The first step to embracing your inner athlete is believing that you have one. Awaken that belief by adopting a few of the following:
Master Movements. When working out, honor your body by properly warming up to activate your muscles properly. Pay attention to proper form to get the most out of the movement and minimize risk of injury. Become aware of your body’s movement and seek out classes with experienced instructors, or personal trainers, who can help you meet your personal fitness goals.
Utilize Compound Movements. The body moves in so many different directions, through all planes of motion. Utilizing compound movements allows the body to train more efficiently because you’re working more than one muscle group at a time. Not only is this an efficient way to exercise, it improves daily performance as it more closely relates to how we move our bodies in real life and increases caloric burn as more muscles working equals more energy consumed.
Train More Than Once Or Twice a Week. Consistency is key for building muscle mass, as well as improving strength, balance and flexibility.
Don’t Go Too Hard Too Often. Alternate your workouts between high strength days, stretch days and rest days. This allows your body to activate different muscle groups on different days but also allows for muscle recovery which reduces the risk of injury of overtraining but also improves the overall efficiency of the physical activity. Recognize that overtraining and burnout are real and embrace rest and active recovery.
Create a Routine. Having a regular routine is a crucial part of awakening your inner athlete. A routine helps you create a habit and stay on course with your goals. Prioritize your health and mental wellbeing by committing to a daily physical activity. Go ahead and prebook fitness classes each week, block an hour on your calendar for an activity each day, or set a standing meeting for a walk with your best friend.
