Understanding Medicare Open Enrollment and ACA Marketplace Deadlines: What Fort Worth Residents Need to Know

As we head into a new year, many people in the Fort Worth area are navigating two important health insurance deadlines: the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period and the ACA/Marketplace Open Enrollment window. These enrollment periods determine your health coverage for the upcoming year, and choosing wisely can impact both your healthcare access and your wallet.

Whether you’re reviewing your Medicare Advantage plan or selecting an ACA Marketplace plan for yourself or your family, it’s important to understand the timelines, rules, and opportunities available to you.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: January 1 – March 31

This enrollment window often gets confused with the fall Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, but it serves a very different purpose.

From January 1 through March 31, individuals already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan have the opportunity to:

  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage (MA) plan to another, or
  • Disenroll from their MA plan and return to Original Medicare (with the option to enroll in a
    standalone Part D plan)

This period does not allow someone to switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage—it is specifically for current MA members who want to make a change.

Reasons you may want to take advantage of this window:

  • Your new 2026 plan isn’t what you expected
  • Your preferred doctors or hospitals aren’t in-network
  • Your prescription drug costs changed unexpectedly
  • Your out-of-pocket costs are higher than anticipated
  • You simply found a plan that fits your needs better

If your January 1 Medicare Advantage coverage isn’t meeting your needs, you have until March 31 to make a one time change.

ACA / Marketplace Open Enrollment: Final Deadline January 15

For Texans under age 65 who rely on ACA Marketplace coverage, the open enrollment window is still open—but not for long.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Enroll by December 15 → Coverage starts January 1
  • Final deadline: January 15 → Coverage begins February 1

This is your opportunity to:

  • Apply for health insurance
  • Switch plans
  • Update income to maximize subsidies
  • Add or remove household members
  • Reduce premiums through available tax credits

Many Fort Worth–area families qualify for significant subsidies—often reducing premiums by hundreds of dollars per month. Plan options also change every year, so even current Marketplace members benefit from reviewing updated networks, premiums, and deductibles.

Missing the January 15 deadline means you cannot enroll in Marketplace coverage unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

Why You Should Work With a Local Agent?

Sorting through Medicare Advantage plans or Marketplace health insurance options can be overwhelming. As a local Fort Worth insurance agent, I help individuals, families, and Medicare recipients understand their coverage options and choose plans that fit their needs—at no cost to you.

I work with major carriers and stay up to date on changing networks, benefits, and pricing so you don’t have to navigate it alone.

If you’re unhappy with your Medicare Advantage plan, you have until March 31 to make a change.

If you need Marketplace coverage, the final deadline is January 15.
