Indigenous Perspectives Traveling Exhibition: Centering Native Voices and Histories at Richmond County Public Library

The Richmond County Public Library, housed on the campus of Rappahannock Community College in Warsaw, is proud to announce that it will host Indigenous Perspectives, a traveling exhibition developed by the Library of Virginia, from January 5 through February 14, 2026. The exhibition highlights the histories, voices, and contemporary experiences of Virginia’s 11 federally and state-recognized tribal communities.

Indigenous Perspectives places the stories and lived experiences of Indigenous peoples at the center of an active exploration of the Library of Virginia’s archival collections. Through this work, the Library of Virginia and tribal partners are building an ongoing, collaborative effort to ensure that Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and interpretations are meaningfully incorporated into the historical record.

About the Exhibition

The exhibition features eight visually engaging panels organized around themes that are essential to Native identity and resilience: sovereignty, environment, identity, community, language, and the future. Each panel invites visitors to reflect on the enduring presence, cultural contributions, and histories of Virginia’s Indigenous communities. A kiosk and touchscreen monitor offer interactive learning opportunities. Visitors can explore supplemental stories, images, and historical materials that deepen their understanding of the themes presented.

A Resource for Learners of All Ages

Educators, students, and lifelong learners will find a wealth of related educational resources provided by the Library of Virginia. These materials extend the exhibit beyond its physical display and support classroom instruction, community programs, and personal learning about Indigenous culture and history.

Honoring Indigenous History and Culture

By spotlighting the perspectives and traditions of Virginia’s tribal communities, Indigenous Perspectives encourages meaningful dialogue and a deeper appreciation for the role of Native peoples in shaping the Commonwealth’s past, present, and future. Richmond County Public Library invites community members of all ages to experience this important exhibition and engage with the stories it shares.

“We are grateful for the Library of Virginia’s collaboration with tribal communities and are proud to bring this important work to our region,” said Malaika Albrecht, Library Programs and Outreach Specialist. “Indigenous Perspectives helps ensure that Native voices are centered in the telling of Virginia’s history.”
