Love Begins With You

February often invites us to look outward for signs of love. We scan our relationships, hope for meaningful gestures, and measure connection by how seen we feel by others. While love from partners and loved ones can be deeply nourishing, it cannot replace the steady, sustaining relationship we have with ourselves.

Self-love is not about indulgence or self-centeredness. It is about self-respect. It is the quiet, consistent way we speak to ourselves when no one is listening. It is how we honor our limits, listen to our needs, and allow ourselves to take up space without apology. When self-love is absent, even the most devoted relationships can feel fragile. When it is present, we feel more grounded, resilient, and whole.

We show self-love through everyday acts. We rest when we are tired instead of pushing through. We tell ourselves the truth with kindness instead of criticism. We acknowledge our wants without minimizing them. We choose boundaries that protect our emotional well-being. These practices are not selfish. They are essential. They allow us to show up more fully in our relationships rather than asking others to fill the places we have neglected within ourselves.

Self-affirmations can feel uncomfortable at first, especially if you are used to measuring your worth through productivity or caregiving. Yet offering ourselves words of compassion can slowly soften old patterns of self-judgment. Over time, these small moments of care become a language of love we learn to speak fluently.

This Valentine’s Day, consider expanding the definition of love. Alongside cards and flowers, make space for self-reflection, creativity, and self-expression. Love is not only something we receive; it is also something we practice. When we learn to offer it inward, every relationship benefits.

If you are curious about exploring self-love through creativity, reflection, and connection, my Love Notes creative art workshop on February 14 offers a space to begin.
