Authenticity by definition means – being true to one’s own personality, spirit, and character by aligning your actions with your genuine values, beliefs, and feelings. What does this really mean and how does it manifest in our daily lives. For me, as a father to 4 daughters, I have learned the value of being authentic and the safe space it creates within a relationship to foster open and honest dialogue as well as the ability and need to be vulnerable and accountable for my own actions.
To create trust in a relationship, we must show authenticity by making sure our actions align with our words. When our actions align with our words, it creates a space where all involved can be their authentic self and accepted as that person. Often this is not the easy way, it can involve some potential conflict, or at a minimum uncomfortable conversation, and potentially hurt feelings. However, when we get to the other side of the discomfort, we can realize relationship growth, resulting in a truly authentic interaction.
So how does this translate into business. The 3 pillars I employ in any business relationship are honesty, communication and accountability.
Honesty means when a customer asks for a consultation or even after we are hired, we always do what is in the best interest of the client; even if it means we make less money. We believe in making sure that the customer receives the best advice regarding their project. Sometimes that means we share our insight into whether they need some of the services or whether they need to spend the extra money on items that can be obtained for less money. We always try to achieve the look of the project at the best price possible for our client while still making profit for the company.
Communication means we always respond to calls, texts, and emails. It means we notify clients regularly regarding the status of their project. It means when there are or will be delays for any reason, we notify clients before the delay or as soon as possible. It means we meet with clients and address any and all issues and provide clear solutions to any issues that may arise.
Accountability means we take responsibility for our actions and communicate clearly with our clients. We strive for 110% in any project we take on; that being said, we are also human so things can happen during projects. The way to mitigate any issues is by making sure the client knows what the issue is in detail, what our part is, and what we will do to resolve the issue. Without accountability, there can be no trust which is the most critical component to developing a healthy and mutually beneficial relationship.
Whether in my personal or professional relationships, I always fall back on these 3 pillars to guide my actions and the actions that are represented through 2 Bros. I will leave you with this final thought: Without honesty, there can be no safe space for communication. Without communication, there is no room for accountability. Without accountability there is no trust.
I look forward to sharing with you again next month.
