Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy 101

Our bodies are reliant on oxygen more than any other substance for the smooth operation of each living cell. Oxygen makes life possible. It is viewed as our “Lifeforce.“ The absence or shortage of oxygen in the body, predictably, leads to a crisis, which can cause significant health issues or even cell death. The increased delivery of oxygen through increasing barometric pressure has demonstrated increased healing capacity in the body by increasing cell function. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been gaining attention for its potentially powerful benefits in the treatment of various types of injuries and conditions.

The therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which allows the body to absorb more oxygen than would be possible under normal atmospheric conditions. The increased oxygen levels absorbed by the body under hyperbaric conditions have been shown to promote the body’s natural healing processes and have been found to offer several benefits. One of the primary benefits of HBOT is its ability to accelerate the healing process. When the body receives higher levels of atmospheric pressure and oxygen together, this can enhance tissue repair, reduce inflammation, increase stem cell proliferation and stimulate the growth of new blood vessels.

This leads to faster recovery from different types of injuries. Pain relief is often reported following hyperbaric treatments. HBOT has been shown to contribute to the release of natural pain-relieving substances in the body, thus promoting a more comfortable recovery process. There is also an observed increase in the body’s ability to fight off certain types of infections, due to the increase in atmospheric pressure and oxygen, creating an environment that is inhospitable to certain types of bacteria. Increased level of athletic performance and endurance by promoting faster recovery between maximum effort and performances.

This can be beneficial for athletes, looking to return to training and competition following injuries as well. HBOT is experienced by many as improving overall health and well-being. Promoting the body’s natural healing mechanisms while also boosting the immune system.

Dr. Mizuba works with various healthcare professionals in providing hyperbaric oxygen therapy care on the island of Hawaii, and has Dr. Sharon Olson, D.O. in the clinic offering her professional scope of more complicated cases in medicine. Dr. Mizuba and Andrea Mizuba are both board-certified by Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society, Hyperbaric Medicine International, and International Hyperbaric Association. He serves as faculty, teaching hyperbaric oxygen operations safety training in North America and Europe. He works at each the women’s and men’s events of the U.S. Open for golf each summer. He has served in professional baseball and hockey, and been an advisor to professional baseball for head injuries.

The O2 Lab Hawaii in Waimea offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy at its finest, with hard shell chambers that are capable of variable pressures and oxygen delivery which can be tailored to the needs of each individual. The hyperbaric oxygen chambers are capable of offering effective and comfortable treatments, even allowing the person inside the chamber to watch TV during a chamber session.
