How to Know If Your Roof Has Hail Damage

After a hailstorm, most homeowners check their cars and windows—but your roof often takes the biggest hit. The challenge? Hail damage isn’t always obvious from the ground. As roofers, we frequently find serious issues that homeowners never realized were there. Here’s how to tell if your roof may have been damaged by hail and when to call a professional.

Look for Signs Around Your Home

Before climbing anywhere, walk your property and look for clues:

  • Dented gutters, downspouts, or metal vents
  • Cracked siding or chipped paint
  • Damaged window screens or AC fins
  • Shingle granules collecting near downspouts

If these areas are impacted, your roof likely was too.

Check for Shingle Bruising

Hail doesn’t always knock shingles loose. Often, it bruises them. A bruised shingle may look normal, but feels soft when pressed. That impact breaks the protective mat under the shingle, allowing water to seep in over time. From a safe vantage point, look for:

  • Dark spots or irregular circles
  • Shiny or exposed asphalt
  • Missing granules
  • Cracked or split edges

Granules protect your roof from UV rays. When they’re gone, your roof ages much faster.

Inspect Flashing and Roof Fixtures

Metal parts show hail damage clearly. Look at:

  • Chimney flashing
  • Skylights
  • Roof vents
  • Exhaust pipes

Dents, bends, or loosened seals can quickly turn into leaks.

Watch for Interior Warning Signs

Sometimes the first clue is inside your home:

  • Water stains on ceilings
  • Damp attic insulation
  • Moldy smells
  • Unexpected spikes in humidity

These may appear weeks or months after the storm.

Know When to Call a Professional

If you suspect hail damage, don’t rely on guesswork. Walking on a roof incorrectly can cause more harm than good. A licensed roofer knows how to spot hidden issues and document damage properly—critical if you’re filing an insurance claim. A professional inspection can:

  • Identify bruising not visible from the ground
  • Photograph damage for insurance
  • Prevent small problems from becoming costly repairs

Hail damage doesn’t always mean immediate leaks, but it almost always shortens the life of your roof. The sooner it’s identified, the more options you have. After a major storm, consider a roof inspection as preventive care for your home.
