Starting your career can feel overwhelming, but there are steps you can take to set yourself up for success. From building your professional presence to networking, these tips can help you navigate the job search.

Online presence

Your digital footprint is often the first impression you make with employers. Keep LinkedIn and other social media profiles and posts professional, highlight your skills and accomplishments, and share your career goals. Consider posting relevant projects or articles to showcase your expertise, and make sure all profiles reflect a consistent, polished and professional headshot. AI tools can help you enhance your content; use them to optimize keywords and align your profile with your career aspirations.

Practical tip: Google yourself to see what shows up.

Start with a strong resume

Your resume should clearly and concisely showcase your skills, projects and accomplishments. Tailor it for each role you apply for and proofread carefully. Using AI can also help suggest improvements, identify keywords and ensure it aligns with the job description. A polished resume makes a strong first impression and increases your chances of landing interviews.

Practical tip: Ask a friend or mentor to review your resume to catch small mistakes and provide feedback.

Networking

Many positions are filled through referrals, so building relationships can give you an advantage. Focus on maintaining relationships over time with former coworkers, supervisors, professional acquaintances, peers and alumni. Consider joining professional organizations or attending local career events to expand your network. Stay in touch with people regularly, share the types of opportunities that interest you, and maintain a professional LinkedIn profile.

Practical tip: Attend at least one networking event or reach out to a new contact each month. It’s easier to build relationships when communication is consistent.

Get “interview-ready”

A strong interview starts with preparation. Prepare for interviews by researching the company, understanding the role and being ready to discuss how your skills and experiences align. Practice answering common questions and prepare thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer. Leveraging AI can help with mock interviews as well as refining your questions and responses. On the day of your interview, dress appropriately, arrive early and bring a positive and professional attitude.

Practical tip: Do a mock interview with a friend or mentor and ask for honest feedback.

Every role, even if it’s not your dream job, offers valuable learning opportunities to grow professionally, build relationships and demonstrate reliability. Staying flexible, seeking mentors and exploring diverse roles and industries can broaden your career prospects. Volunteering or interning can help you gain practical skills, expand your network and secure future opportunities:

  • Treat every job as a learning opportunity: Focus on excelling in your work, building relationships and leaving a positive impression.
  • Stay flexible and proactive: Explore different roles, industries or locations to expand your experience and career options.
  • Leverage mentorship and networking: Seek guidance from mentors and engage in volunteering or internships to grow your skills and network.
