Summer Is the Time to Get Ahead: A Homeowner’s Guide to Plumbing and Heating Maintenance

Admit it – you’re not thinking about your plumbing and heating systems right now, are you?  That’s exactly why I’m here to share some things you can do during the summer to stay ahead of the curve and keep your plumbing and heating systems operating at peak efficiency.

After a long New England winter, your home has been through a lot. Pipes have expanded and contracted, your heating system has been working overtime, and your water usage has likely shifted. Now, with a little breathing room before the next cold stretch, there’s a real opportunity to get ahead of potential issues before they turn into inconvenient (and expensive) problems.

As a father of three, I know firsthand how quickly schedules fill up. Between work, kids’ activities, and everything else life throws your way, the last thing anyone wants is a surprise plumbing issue. Let’s stay ahead of it so everything works smoothly when you need it most.

First thing – take a look at your outdoor plumbing. Hose bibs and outdoor spigots can take a beating during the winter months. Even if they seem fine, small cracks or leaks can go unnoticed until they worsen. Turn them on, check for steady flow, and look for any signs of dripping or reduced pressure. Catching something early here can save you from a much bigger repair down the line.

Summer is also a great time to think about your water heater. It may not be top of mind when it’s warm out, but sediment buildup doesn’t take a season off. Flushing your water heater helps improve efficiency and extends its lifespan. It’s one of those simple maintenance steps that many homeowners don’t realize can make a big difference.

Another area that deserves attention is your drains. With kids home more often, guests coming and going, and outdoor activities in full swing, your plumbing system is seeing a different kind of workload. Kitchen drains, in particular, can build up grease and debris from summer cooking and grilling. A professional cleaning or even just being mindful of what goes down the drain can prevent clogs before they start.

Finally, it might feel counterintuitive, but summer is actually the ideal time to think about your heating system. Scheduling a tune-up now means you’re not scrambling in the fall when everyone else is trying to do the same thing. A quick inspection can identify wear and tear, improve efficiency, and ensure you’re ready when temperatures drop again.

One thing I always tell homeowners is this: your home works best when small issues stay small. A little proactive maintenance during the summer months can go a long way in avoiding disruptions later.

At Plumbing Solutions, we work with families every day who are balancing busy lives while trying to stay on top of home maintenance. Whether it’s a quick check, a seasonal tune-up, or something that just doesn’t seem quite right, having a trusted partner makes all the difference.
