For many girls, the college essay arrives after years of pressure to achieve, perform, and package themselves neatly for evaluation. By the summer before senior year, many students have internalized the idea that they are a résumé first and a person second: a GPA, a course load, a list of accomplishments, a carefully managed narrative.
But meaningful personal writing rarely emerges from pressure. It emerges from reflection, confidence, safety and trust in one’s own voice.
A Different Kind of Essay Workshop
The “Her Story” retreat is not your typical high-pressure writing workshop. And it’s certainly a far cry from the traditional essay-writing “boot camps.” It is a two-day immersive experience designed specifically for rising senior girls who are ready to claim their narrative — not just for an admissions officer, but for themselves. The retreat operates on a simple but important premise: students cannot produce their most authentic, resonant work while their nervous systems are in a constant state of stress.
The college process, like so many teen stressors, can trigger “fight or flight” responses, and we have both seen this firsthand in our work. When students feel anxious or overwhelmed, creativity narrows, self-doubt takes over, and reflective thinking becomes much harder. Her Story intentionally flips this script by integrating mindfulness, movement, somatic grounding exercises, and a supportive community environment before students ever put pen to paper.
Writing From a Place of Authenticity
This retreat is not about teaching students how to manufacture the “perfect” essay or create a polished personal brand. Instead, it creates space for students to slow down, reflect honestly, and reconnect with their own stories. Through guided writing exercises, conversation, movement, and moments of reflection, students begin to approach the essay process from a place of authenticity rather than performance.
Of course, students will leave with tangible progress – meaningful brainstorming, strong essay direction, and often an early draft already underway. But the deeper goal of Her Story extends beyond the application itself.
Confidence Beyond the Admissions Process
We want young women to walk away understanding that their worth is not contingent upon a college acceptance letter. We want them to feel more grounded in who they are, more confident in their voice, and more capable of telling their story with clarity and honesty.
The college essay is one of the few places in the admissions process where students are invited to speak in their own voice. We believe that experience should feel empowering, not performative.
Because before an essay is an application requirement, it is a reflection of a young person learning to understand and trust her own story.
