Road Trip Ready: How to Handle an Accident Away From Home

Summer means vacations, weekend road trips, and extra time spent on the road with family and friends. Unfortunately, it also means an increase in traffic accidents—often happening far from home. If you find yourself in an accident while traveling, staying calm and knowing what to do can make the situation much less stressful.

First, check everyone for injuries and move to a safe location if possible. Call 911 if anyone is hurt or if the vehicles are blocking traffic. Even in a minor accident, it’s important to contact local law enforcement and obtain a police report. Next, document everything. Take clear photos of all vehicles, license plates, the surrounding area, and any visible damage. Exchange insurance and contact information with the other driver, but avoid discussing fault at the scene.

One mistake many drivers make is rushing through repairs while away from home. Temporary repairs may be necessary to continue your trip safely, but you often have the option to complete full repairs with a trusted shop once you return home. Modern vehicles contain advanced safety systems, sensors, and cameras that even minor collisions can affect. Proper repairs and calibrations are important not only for appearance but also for the safety of your family.

Before heading out this summer, make sure your insurance card is current, keep emergency contact information in your vehicle, and consider storing your roadside assistance information in your phone.

A little preparation can go a long way toward making summer travel safer and less stressful for everyone on the road.
