Summer in New England is one of my favorite seasons. Long days at the beach, afternoons by the pool, and weekends on the water are hard to beat. Unfortunately, all that sunshine and fun can be incredibly hard on your hair.
As a colorist, I often tell clients to think of their hair the same way they think about their skin: Protection is always easier than repair.
If you’re fortunate enough to have healthy, untreated “virgin” hair, summer is the perfect time to preserve what nature gave you. UV rays, salt water, and chlorine can strip moisture from the hair shaft, leaving even the healthiest hair dry, dull, and more vulnerable to breakage. A simple ritual of wearing a hat, rinsing hair before swimming, and using professional-quality moisturizing products can go a long way toward maintaining strength and shine.
For those with damaged or chemically processed hair, summer requires a little more intention. Hair that is already compromised has fewer defenses against environmental stress. Sun exposure can further weaken the cuticle, while chlorine and salt water can accelerate dryness and brittleness. This is the season to embrace restorative rituals: hydrating masks, bond-building treatments, and regular trims. Consistent care can help stop damage from progressing while gradually restoring softness, elasticity, and manageability.
Colored hair deserves special attention. Whether you’ve invested in subtle highlights, dimensional balayage, or a complete color transformation, your salon color is an investment of both time and money. Summer elements can cause color to fade prematurely, alter tone, and reduce the vibrancy that makes professional color look exceptional.
One of the most common mistakes I see is allowing chlorinated or salt water to remain in the hair for hours after swimming. Instead, rinse immediately with fresh water whenever possible. Using color-safe shampoos and conditioners, minimizing excessive heat styling, and scheduling periodic glossing treatments can dramatically extend the life of your color between appointments.
My favorite advice is simple: Don’t wait until your hair feels damaged to start protecting it. Healthy hair, damaged hair, and color-treated hair all benefit from proactive care. Small habits practiced consistently throughout the summer can make the difference between hair that feels depleted by September and hair that looks just as beautiful as it did in June.
At Blue Salon, we believe great hair isn’t just created in the salon, it’s maintained through thoughtful care every day. With a few simple summer rituals, you can protect your hair, preserve your color, and enjoy every moment of the season with confidence.
