First Aid Basics Every Hudson Valley Pet Owner Should Have

Living in the Hudson Valley is a pretty good deal for pets & people. We get fall colors, snowy winters, muddy springs, summer hikes, & enough backyard wildlife to make your dog believe he is starring in his own nature documentary. But with all that beauty comes a little danger. Pets can get into trouble quickly, and a basic first aid kit can buy valuable time until you reach your veterinarian.

Start with bandaging supplies. Keep gauze, non-stick pads, & a soft wrap in your kit. You do not need to be a surgeon to gently cover a cut paw, scrape, or bleeding wound long enough to get professional care. Our trails, gardens, stone walls, and general Hudson Valley ruggedness are beautiful — but not always paw-friendly.

Keep a fresh bottle of hydrogen peroxide, but use it only under veterinary direction. In certain toxin ingestions, it may be used to induce vomiting, but it is not safe for every situation. Some substances can cause more damage coming back up. Call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic first, then follow instructions exactly.

Add Benadryl, because many pets enjoy sampling what I call “spicy sky raisins” — bees, wasps, & hornets. Stings can cause swelling or allergic reactions. Ask your veterinarian ahead of time what dose is appropriate for your pet. Do not guess.

Your kit should also include important phone numbers: your regular veterinarian, the nearest emergency veterinary hospital, & poison control. In an emergency, panic is not a plan.

Finally, the most important first aid tool is still your brain. Know your pet, know your surroundings, and do not assume your dog understands cliffs, caves, porcupines, traffic, or bad life choices. A little preparation can prevent a small problem from becoming a very expensive disaster.
