Arthritis can make everyday tasks more difficult than they should be. Pain, stiffness, swelling, and changes in the joints of the hands, wrists, elbows, or shoulders may affect everything from buttoning a jacket and preparing a meal to gardening, golfing, or enjoying favorite hobbies.
At FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Center – Madison Downtown, we believe a diagnosis should not define your lifestyle. Our occupational therapy services provide personalized, conservative care designed to help manage symptoms, improve function, and support greater independence in daily life.
What Is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapists specialize in helping people of all ages adapt to disabilities, injuries, and health conditions that interfere with everyday activities. Our goal is straightforward: helping you do the things that matter most to you.
That may include dressing, bathing, cooking family meals, managing laundry, returning to work, or getting back to the hobbies and routines you enjoy.
What Can You Expect?
Your journey begins with a 60-minute outpatient evaluation. We will discuss your medical history, the challenges you are experiencing, and the personal goals you would like to achieve.
Your occupational therapist will assess upper-extremity function, including range of motion, strength, coordination, and the specific daily tasks that have become difficult or painful.
Personalized Care for Your Needs
Our treatment plans may include:
- Support and stability: Kinesio taping and customized splinting
- Strength and flexibility: Targeted upper-extremity strengthening, stretching, and joint mobilization techniques
- Joint-protection education: Practical strategies for moving safely and reducing strain during daily activities
- Adaptive equipment: Specialized tools designed to make everyday tasks easier on painful joints
- Energy conservation and pacing: Approaches to help manage fatigue and reduce the likelihood of flare-ups
- Physical-agent modalities: Ultrasound, electrical stimulation, paraffin wax, and TENS, as appropriate
You do not have to face arthritis-related limitations alone. Occupational therapy may help you move with greater confidence, protect your joints, and reclaim more of the daily activities that make life meaningful.
