Stelfonta®: A Targeted Treatment Option for Canine Mast Cell Tumors

Mast cell tumors (MCTs) are one of the most common skin cancers diagnosed in dogs. Their behavior can vary widely—some remain localized and slow growing, while others are aggressive and unpredictable. At CareFur Veterinarians, we are committed to offering advanced, evidence-based treatment options, including Stelfonta® (tigilanol tiglate injection), a non-surgical therapy for appropriately selected mast cell tumors.

Stelfonta is an FDA-approved intratumoral injection designed to treat certain non-metastatic cutaneous mast cell tumors, as well as select subcutaneous tumors located on the lower limbs. Unlike chemotherapy or systemic medications, Stelfonta is injected directly into the tumor, where it works locally to rapidly destroy tumor tissue by disrupting the tumor’s blood supply and cellular structure.

When is Stelfonta a good option?

Not every mast cell tumor is a candidate for Stelfonta, which is why careful case selection is essential. Diagnostics typically include cytology, tumor measurement, staging when indicated, and a thoughtful discussion of all treatment options—including surgery, monitoring, or referral therapies when appropriate.

For tumors in locations where surgery would be difficult, invasive, or require extensive reconstruction, Stelfonta may offer an effective alternative with a single treatment.

What should pet owners expect?

Stelfonta causes a controlled destruction of the tumor, which results in visible tissue breakdown and an open wound as the tumor sloughs. While this appearance can be startling, it is expected and closely monitored. Healing occurs over time with proper wound care and follow-up. To reduce the risk of mast cell degranulation and systemic reactions, patients are carefully premedicated with antihistamines and corticosteroids as part of a strict safety protocol.

Advanced care, delivered with compassion

At CareFur Veterinarians, Stelfonta therapy is performed with close supervision, clear communication, and individualized aftercare plans. Our goal is not only effective tumor control but also minimizing stress for pets and providing transparency and support for families every step of the way.

If your dog has been diagnosed with a mast cell tumor, a consultation at CareFur Veterinarians can help determine whether Stelfonta—or another treatment option—is the right choice.
