As summer winds down and school routines return, many parents are focused on earlier bedtimes, packing lunches, and adjusting schedules. But if there is one habit that has the biggest impact on your child’s health, learning, behavior, and development, it’s sleep.
Sleep is so much more than simply “rest.” While your child sleeps, their body is hard at work. Growth hormone is released to support healthy development, the brain processes and stores new information from the day, tissues repair, the immune system strengthens, and the nervous system resets for the challenges ahead.
It’s no surprise that after a poor night’s sleep, children often have a harder time focusing in class, regulating their emotions, solving problems, or even enjoying activities they normally love. Many parents notice more meltdowns, shorter tempers, and difficulty paying attention—but sometimes the missing piece is simply restorative sleep.
Creating healthy sleep habits doesn’t have to be complicated. A consistent bedtime and wake-up time—even on weekends—can make a significant difference. Limiting screens for at least an hour before bed, creating a calm bedtime routine, and keeping bedrooms cool, dark, and quiet all help signal to the brain that it’s time to rest.
As a chiropractor, I also encourage parents to think about how the nervous system influences sleep. When a child’s body is under physical or emotional stress, it can be more difficult to fully relax and settle into restorative sleep. Whether that stress comes from a busy school schedule, sports, growth spurts, or everyday life, the nervous system is constantly working to help the body adapt.
Chiropractic care focuses on supporting healthy nervous system function so the body can better regulate, recover, and adapt to life’s daily demands. While chiropractic care isn’t a treatment for sleep disorders, many families report that once their child’s body is moving well and their nervous system is functioning optimally, bedtime routines become smoother and sleep quality often improves as part of their overall wellness journey.
As we head into another school year, remember that healthy habits don’t begin when the first bell rings—they begin the night before. Prioritizing sleep is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child, supporting not only their health today but also their ability to learn, grow, and thrive throughout the school year.
Here’s to a school year filled with healthy routines, well-rested kids, and families who are ready to take on each new day.

Dr. Jaclyn’s Family Wellness Tip of the Month: If your child’s bedtime is changing for the school year, start adjusting it by 15–20 minutes every few nights instead of making a one-hour jump the night before school starts. Small changes are easier on the whole family’s nervous system.
