When homeowners see their newly installed countertops, they are looking at the finished result. What they do not always see is the experienced team, specialized equipment, planning, and detailed inspections that bring each piece from an initial idea to a completed surface.

For most customers, Nancy is the first person they meet. With approximately 30 years of experience at Counter Effects, she helps homeowners select colours and bring the different elements of their project together, including cabinetry, flooring, sinks, and faucets.
Once the selections are finalized, Mike coordinates the scheduling and arranges for owner Ed Krahn to visit the home. Ed completes the templating, takes photographs, and gathers the information needed for production.
From there, the work moves behind the scenes.
When the material arrives at the Counter Effects facility, the team records its dimensions and inspects it for flaws or markings before anything is cut. If an imperfection is found, they determine whether the layout can be adjusted to avoid it. When that is not possible, new material may need to be ordered.
“We try to avoid that whenever we can, but we are not going to send something out with an imperfection,” Ed says.
The project is then programmed for production. For materials with noticeable movement or veining, the team can photograph the slab and digitally plan how each section will be positioned, allowing them to consider how the pattern will flow before cutting begins.
Inside the shop, Neil oversees production. With more than 30 years at Counter Effects, he has been with the company longer than anyone else on the team. His role includes cutting, operating the CNC equipment, and supervising the work completed in the shop.
The CNC machine creates many of the major details, including sink openings, notches, edges, and custom shapes. Faucet holes are often completed during installation so the team can confirm the final placement and accommodate additions such as soap or water dispensers.
After cutting, the countertop moves to Heath for polishing and finishing. Each piece is cleaned and labelled before returning to Neil for a final inspection.
“He double checks the measurements, looks over the polishing, and makes sure there are no flaws, chips, or cracks,” Ed says. “Once he signs off on it, it goes onto the cart and is ready for installation.”
Counter Effects also uses a closed loop water recycling system. Water from the CNC machine and polishing equipment is filtered and reused, helping reduce unnecessary waste during production.
