There was a time when jewellery came with a rulebook.
Pearls were for ladies who lunch. Diamonds were for special occasions. Gold and silver? Absolutely not together. Well, excuse us while we break a few rules!
Here in Amherstburg, where the river meets historic streets, country roads and the riverfront with the kind of community where you can leave the house for coffee and somehow see half the people you know, we are a fabulously mixed bunch of personalities and lifestyles and jewellery should feel exactly the same.
At Precision Jewellers, we’ve been part of the Amherstburg community since 1966, helping generations find pieces for engagements, anniversaries, graduations, birthdays and all those wonderfully vague requests that begin with, “I don’t know exactly what I want, but I’ll know it when I see it.” That’s half the fun!
1. How do you know which metal suits you best?
Start by ignoring anyone who tells you that you can’t wear yellow gold because you’re a “silver person.” There are no jewellery police.
Yellow gold is warm and classic, white gold and silver feel crisp and timeless, while rose gold has that softer, romantic thing going on. Your skin tone, hair colour and wardrobe can all give you clues, but the best test is much simpler: try it on and see what makes you feel fabulous.
Gold with white gold? Yes. Silver with gold? Also yes. A mixed metal piece can be the perfect peacekeeper if you’re nervous about combining them.
2. How should jewellery change from everyday to the office to a night out?
Your jewellery collection should have a day shift and a night shift.
Everyday is where your favourites earn their keep. Hoops, a simple chain, your watch, a few rings, the pieces you put on without even thinking about them.
For the office, think polished rather than precious. A great pair of earrings or a simple necklace can make you look like you have your life together, even if your inbox suggests otherwise.
Then it’s five o’clock, now the statement earrings are invited.
Add a cocktail ring, swap the delicate chain for something bolder, or pile on the bracelets. You don’t need to change your entire outfit. Sometimes changing the jewellery is enough.
3. How do you balance jewellery with your hairstyle, neckline and statement pieces?
I think jewellery should reflect your personality, and I’m all about mixing it up and having fun but if you want to follow some basic rules then that’s fine too, here are some pointers;
If your hair is up, let the earrings have their moment. If you’re wearing a spectacular necklace, let the earrings be the backing singers.
Match your necklines, pair V-necks with matching plunging pendants, crew necks with short pieces that sit above the collar, and strapless tops with chokers or bold statement necklaces
Wearing a very busy outfit? Keep the jewellery a little quieter.
And if everything you’re wearing is fairly simple, that’s your cue to have some fun, a giant ring never ruined a perfectly good outfit.
4. How do you make vintage or inherited jewellery feel modern?
Wear it with something unexpected.
Grandma’s ring would look fabulous with a sleek modern band. Wear an inherited pendant on a contemporary chain. Pair an older piece with denim. Suddenly it doesn’t look dated. It looks intentional.
And if the piece really isn’t your style, don’t immediately banish it to the back of the jewellery box. Sometimes a new setting, chain, professional cleaning or redesign can completely transform it.
5. What if your jewellery box is basically a museum of gifts from the last 10 or 20 years?
Empty it, everything. Put it on the bed and start trying things on.
You’ll quickly discover three categories: “Why don’t I wear this?” “I forgot I had this!” and “Oh, I actually love this.”
Maybe you consistently reach for yellow gold. Maybe you love colourful gemstones. Maybe every favourite piece is delicate. Or perhaps you suddenly realize you’ve been buying the same style of earrings for fifteen years.
That’s your personal style trying to tell you something, listen to her.
6. How should someone start a ring stack?
Start with one ring, that’s it. Find something you absolutely love. Then, eventually, add a simple band. Maybe later you add a textured ring, a different metal or a little gemstone.
Don’t feel pressured to create the Instagram-perfect stack in one afternoon.
The best stacks often look like they’ve been collected over time, because they have.
7. Should you keep a jewellery wish list?
Absolutely.
In fact, we’re going to go one step further: make one.
Take a photo of something you love. Try it on. Save it. Make a note of the metal, stone or style.
At Precision, we can also add pieces to your wish list in store, which means when someone inevitably asks, “What do you want for your birthday?” you don’t have to answer, “Oh, I don’t know.” You know. And if nobody is asking there’s always that random Thursday.
8. Does a great jewellery collection have to be expensive?
Absolutely not.
A beautiful jewellery collection is about having the right mix. Some pieces are worth investing in because they’re designed to become part of your story for decades. Others are chosen because they’re fresh, fun and simply you.
At Precision Jewellers, we believe there should be room for both.
For those looking for something truly personal, our custom jewellery can be designed around your ideas from the style and details to choosing your own stones creating a piece that is entirely your own.
And when you’re ready for something unforgettable, there are statement pieces, including stunning diamond tennis necklaces, that are made to turn heads.
But a well-curated jewellery collection doesn’t have to stop there.
Our gold and diamond collections feature both natural and lab-grown diamonds, with pieces starting from $355. Our sterling silver and lab-grown diamond necklaces offers beautiful and simple designs starting from $99, while Italgem Steel brings a contemporary edge to the collection, with pieces starting from $30 for both men and women.
Some pieces are investments. Some are everyday favourites. Some are simply there because you tried them on and thought, “Well, obviously I’m taking this home.”
9. What’s the best advice for making your jewellery collection feel personal?
Stop worrying about what you’re supposed to like.
Pay attention to what you actually wear.
If you always reach for gold, buy gold. If coloured stones make you happy, wear colour. If you love mixing old and new, do it. If you wear the same little pair of earrings every single day, maybe that’s telling you something.
Your jewellery collection should reflect your life your taste, your memories, your wardrobe, your personality and occasionally your questionable impulse purchases.
It doesn’t need to be enormous, it just needs to feel like you. Perhaps that’s the best jewellery rule of all: If you love it, wear it.
There is no jewellery police.
And frankly, Amherstburg has enough personality already.
Your jewellery should keep up.
