Driving down Highway 24 recently, we couldn’t help but notice a boat being towed with its bar light glowing brightly in the middle of the day. While it may not seem like a big deal, it’s actually a great reminder of something every boat owner should do before leaving the water – or even before pulling out of the driveway: turn off your battery switch.
Your boat’s battery switch is designed to disconnect power from most onboard electrical systems when the boat isn’t in use. Leaving it on can slowly drain your batteries as lights, electronics, stereos, pumps, and other accessories continue to draw power – even if you don’t realize they’re still on.
A dead battery is one of the most common reasons boaters find themselves stranded at the dock or unable to start their engine. Fortunately, it’s also one of the easiest problems to prevent.
Before you tow your boat home or leave it sitting between trips, take a few seconds to:
- Turn off all lights and accessories.
- Switch off your battery disconnect.
- Double-check that nothing is still drawing power.
- If storing your boat for an extended period, consider using a quality battery maintainer to keep your batteries in peak condition.
Of course, there are a few exceptions. Some boats are wired so that essential equipment, such as automatic bilge pumps or security systems, bypasses the battery switch. Be sure you understand how your particular boat is wired so you don’t accidentally disable equipment that’s meant to remain powered.
Developing a simple “Turn It Off” routine can save you from unnecessary battery replacements, frustrating no-start situations, and costly service calls. A quick walk-around before you head home is time well spent.
