For the First Time in Years, Homeowners Have Options Again

If you looked at your home or auto insurance a few years ago and decided it wasn’t worth the headache of shopping around, it may be time to take another look.

For much of the past six years, homeowners had very little leverage. Insurance companies tightened underwriting, premiums climbed, and shopping your insurance often meant finding the same price or no other reasonable options. Today, that’s beginning to change.

While rates aren’t suddenly dropping across the board, more insurance companies are actively competing for homeowners again here in Massachusetts. If your insurance hasn’t been reviewed in a few years, today’s market may look very different from the one you encountered the last time you shopped.

For many Westwood families, that’s worth a closer look.

One of the biggest misconceptions carried over from the past several years is that if shopping your insurance didn’t produce a better result once, it probably won’t today. That may have been true during the toughest years of the market. It isn’t necessarily true anymore.

Insurance companies continually adjust their pricing, underwriting guidelines, and the types of homes they want to insure. Few homeowners realize how much those priorities can change over time. A company that wasn’t competitive three or four years ago may now be among the most competitive, while another carrier that once offered excellent pricing may no longer be the best fit.

Of course, the market isn’t the only thing that’s changed.

Take a typical Westwood household. Perhaps you’ve added a teenage driver, purchased an electric vehicle, renovated your home, or bundled your home and auto insurance years ago without revisiting your coverage since. Any one of those changes can affect both your premium and which insurance company offers the strongest overall value.

Good student discounts, vehicle assignments, deductible strategies, treatment of students away at college, and the way insurance companies evaluate young drivers can all vary significantly. Small differences in how a policy is structured can sometimes produce meaningful savings while maintaining the same level of protection.

The same is true for homeowners insurance. Construction costs have increased, home improvements add value, and insurance companies continue refining both pricing and coverage. A policy that was the right fit a few years ago may deserve another look today.

It’s also important to remember that not every insurance company approaches homeowners the same way. Some insurers are built to serve a broad national market, while others specialize in specific regions. The Andover Companies, for example, has focused on protecting New England homeowners for more than 195 years. That regional experience gives them a deep understanding of the homes, weather patterns, and rebuilding costs unique to our area. Choosing the right insurance company isn’t just about finding the lowest premium. It’s about finding the best combination of coverage, pricing, and long-term fit for your home and your family.

The biggest opportunity today isn’t simply finding a lower premium. It’s recognizing that the insurance market has changed. Homeowners who assumed there were no better options a few years ago may find today’s marketplace offers more choices than it has in quite some time.

If your home and auto insurance hasn’t been reviewed in the last few years, now is an excellent time to see what’s changed. Your current insurance may still be the best fit. You may also find another company now offers stronger coverage, more competitive pricing, or both.

As summer winds down and families settle back into their routines, September is a natural time to revisit financial and household decisions that often get pushed aside during the busy months. Reviewing your insurance is one of them.
