October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and at Ark Animal Hospital, this one is especially close to our hearts.
Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of caring for countless rescued and adopted pets. Some have overcome difficult beginnings, while others simply found themselves waiting for the right person to come along. No matter how their story began, they all deserve the same thing: the opportunity to be safe, loved and part of a family.
Many members of our Ark team have rescue pets of their own, each with a story that reminds us just how special second chances can be. Here are a few of our favorites.
From Shelter to Staff Favorite: Meet Beef
If you’ve visited Ark on a Friday, there’s a good chance you’ve met Colette, better known around here as “Beef.”
Before becoming our unofficial Friday greeter, Beef was a mama dog who was left at ACCT Philly, Philadelphia’s city animal shelter. She was picked up by The Philly Bully Team, where she received the care she needed before eventually finding her forever home with one of our team members, Kierra.
These days, Beef spends many Fridays at Ark sporting one of her signature outfits, making her rounds through the hospital and collecting plenty of attention along the way. Her life today looks very different from where her story started — and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Right Place, Right Time: Lottie’s Story
Then there’s Lottie, rescued by Megan, one of Ark’s longest-standing team members.
Lottie was found in the South with a large wound on her back. A Good Samaritan brought her to a veterinary hospital for help and as luck would have it, an associate of Crossing Paths Rescue happened to be there at the same time. Talk about the right place at the right time!
That chance encounter eventually led Lottie to Megan and her forever family.
Today, Miss Lottie is living the good life — and isn’t afraid to keep her family on their toes. She’s been known to happily convince Mom to take her for a walk, only to decide partway through that she’s finished walking altogether. The solution? Dad gets the call to come pick them up.
And Then Came Junie Bird
Our newest rescue story belongs to Junie Bird, adopted by one of Ark’s owners, Lauren, through Crossing Paths Rescue.
Junie came to Lauren at just three months old and wasted no time making herself at home. She’s been keeping Lauren’s other rescue dog, Ari, on her toes ever since.
Whether she’s doing one of her signature big stretches, racing through the house with a case of the zoomies or simply creating a little bit of chaos wherever she goes, Junie has brought plenty of laughter, happiness and energy into her home. She’s also quickly become a beloved addition to the Ark family.
Every Rescue Has a Story
Beef, Lottie and Junie are just a few of the many rescue pets loved by members of the Ark team. Their stories may be different, but they all share something important: somewhere along the way, someone chose to help.
A Good Samaritan stopped. A rescue organization stepped in. A foster opened their home. A family decided to adopt. Every person became another link in the chain that eventually led these dogs home.
If you’ve been thinking about adding a dog to your family, this October may be the perfect time to visit a local shelter or rescue. Take your time, ask questions and look for a dog whose personality and needs fit your lifestyle. Sometimes the dog you weren’t expecting is exactly the one you were meant to find.
And if adoption isn’t right for you at the moment, you can still make a difference. Fostering, volunteering or simply sharing an adoptable dog’s story can help bring them one step closer to home.
At Ark Animal Hospital, we’re fortunate to see what happens after the adoption photos and announcements — the years of love, adventures, silly habits, Friday outfits, zoomies and even the occasional mid-walk pickup request.
This Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, we’re celebrating the rescue pets in our own Ark family and all the dogs still waiting for theirs. Here’s to second chances, forever homes and all the wonderful stories still waiting to be written.
