Cybersecurity Awareness Month: What You Need to Know

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this year’s theme, Building a Cyber Strong America, couldn’t be more fitting. At Z‑JAK Technologies, we see firsthand how one click, one outdated system, or one weak password can impact a business.

Many small business owners still believe their companies are too small to be a target, but the reality is they are hit daily. Phishing emails, compromised websites, and ransomware are so sophisticated that even tech-savvy users struggle to spot the dangers.

Established in 2004 as a joint initiative by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the NCSA, 2026 marks the 23rd year of the Cybersecurity Awareness Month initiative. The campaign is a reminder that protecting your business is a shared responsibility. Whether you’re a solo entrepreneur or running a 50‑person operation, your digital safety depends on consistent, proactive habits.

Here are some best practices to keep your business secure.

Update Systems and Software

Keeping your operating systems, devices, and applications patched with the latest security updates is essential. Systems that aren’t patched regularly leave the door open to attack. Turn on auto‑updates so you’ll receive the latest security patches.

Use Strong Passwords

Weak passwords remain one of the biggest security risks for small businesses. Create unique, complex passwords, and never reuse the same password across multiple accounts. Consider using a password manager that generates strong passwords for every site and stores them securely.

Enable Multi‑Factor Authentication (MFA)

If a cybercriminal gains access to your email, they can reset passwords for your bank accounts, payroll systems, and cloud services. MFA adds an extra layer of security that stops most attacks. At minimum, turn it on for email and financial accounts.

Regularly Back Up Your Data

A good backup protects you from ransomware, accidental file deletion, hardware failure, and natural disasters. Backups should be automated, monitored, and tested regularly.

Educate Yourself and Your Team

Staying on top of the latest cybersecurity threats can be a daunting task. It seems there is a new threat every day. At Z-JAK Technologies, we help our clients by educating them on the latest threats and preparing teams through simulations and test runs to ensure everyone is well informed and staying vigilant.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is an excellent opportunity for business owners to train their teams and encourage safe digital habits. Cybersecurity isn’t a one‑time event, it’s a daily habit. We live in a world where threats evolve daily, and businesses that stay vigilant, updated, and educated are the ones that remain protected.

If you’re unsure where your vulnerabilities are, Z‑JAK Technologies can help you assess your systems and build a plan that grows with your business.
