The holiday season is almost here. Thanksgiving gatherings, Christmas celebrations, travel, family visits, shopping, parties and plenty of good food will soon fill our calendars. It’s a wonderful time of year and it’s also a time when taking care of ourselves can quickly move to the bottom of the list.
We tell ourselves we’ll get back to our health and fitness after the holidays. After the travel. After the parties. After the New Year.
But what if you didn’t have to choose between enjoying the season and taking care of yourself?
One of the greatest benefits of strength training is that it doesn’t have to consume your schedule. At MaxStrength Fitness, our clients strength train for just 20 minutes, twice a week. That’s only 40 minutes out of an entire week to continue investing in the strength that helps you do everything else you enjoy.
And as we head into the winter months, maintaining strength becomes even more important.
As we get older, maintaining muscle and strength plays an increasingly important role in how we move, function and remain independent. Strength supports balance, stability and mobility; all things that matter when Colorado brings snow and icy conditions. It helps us carry luggage through the airport, haul groceries and packages, play with grandchildren, shovel the driveway, decorate the house and stay active during a season when it’s tempting to become a little more sedentary.
The benefits extend far beyond the holidays. Strength helps us continue hiking, skiing, golfing, traveling, gardening and doing the everyday things we may take for granted. Building and maintaining muscle isn’t simply about looking fit. It’s about preserving our ability to live the life we want to live.
Most importantly, consistency matters. Strength isn’t something we build once and keep forever. Like any investment in our health, it requires continued attention. When schedules become busy, it can be tempting to put exercise on hold until January. But maintaining a simple routine throughout November and December can help you enter the New Year with momentum rather than feeling like you have to start over.
So this holiday season, give yourself permission to enjoy the celebrations, the meals and the time with people you love. Your health doesn’t require perfection, and it doesn’t need to take over your life.
It simply requires consistency.
Keep those two 20-minute appointments with yourself each week. Think of them not as something else on your holiday to-do list, but as an investment in being strong enough to fully participate in the life happening around you.
Because the best gift you can give yourself, and the people who count on you, is the strength to keep doing what you love.
Stay strong this holiday season.
