After working on homes throughout Nanoose Bay, Parksville and the surrounding area, we have learned that exterior wood has its own set of challenges here on Vancouver Island. Our rain, coastal moisture and strong summer sun can be hard on decks, fences, siding and other wood surfaces. Choosing the right product is important, but in our experience, proper preparation and application are just as important.
One of the wood-finishing systems we use at EH Premium Painters is Sansin. What we like about Sansin is that it offers different products for different situations rather than trying to use one coating for everything.
Sansin SDF is our versatile penetrating exterior wood finish. It allows the natural character and grain of the wood to remain visible while providing protection against moisture and UV exposure. With a wide range of colours available, SDF can give a fence, siding or deck a completely different look while still allowing the wood itself to show through.
For decks and other horizontal surfaces, Sansin DEC is specifically designed for the job. Decks take considerably more abuse than vertical siding. They are exposed to rain, standing moisture, foot traffic and everyday wear. DEC is a penetrating finish designed for these conditions, giving the wood a more natural appearance while helping protect it from the elements.
Sansin ENS is different again. It is a high-solids, film-forming finish that provides a more substantial protective surface. We look at ENS when a project calls for a more finished appearance and additional surface durability, particularly on doors, windows, millwork and certain exterior wood applications. Depending on the project, ENS can be applied over a compatible penetrating Sansin finish.

One thing we always tell homeowners is that there isn’t a “best” wood finish for every project. The right choice depends on the type of wood, whether the surface is horizontal or vertical, how much weather exposure it receives, what is already on the wood and what the homeowner wants the finished project to look like.
Preparation is where a lot of the difference is made. We take the time to properly clean and prepare the wood before applying the finish, and we pay close attention to moisture levels and weather conditions. On Vancouver Island, you can’t ignore the weather when you’re working with exterior wood.
For us, the goal isn’t simply to make a deck, fence or home look great when we leave. We want the finished wood to continue looking good and performing well as it goes through our wet winters and sunny summers.
Natural wood is part of what makes homes around Nanoose Bay and Parksville so beautiful. When it is properly prepared and finished with the right product, we believe it deserves to be treated that way.
