Lighting for Shorter Days

By November, many of us are turning on the lights before dinner. On Vancouver Island, the shorter days and grey skies make lighting an especially important part of how a home feels. Good lighting helps us see what we are doing, but it can also make a room feel welcoming at the end of a wet day.

The first step is to think about what happens in each space. A kitchen needs clear light where you prepare food. A chair where you read needs a lamp placed close enough to be useful. In a bathroom, light on either side of a mirror can illuminate your face more evenly than a fixture above it.

Then consider how you want a room to feel in the evening. Pot lights can provide excellent general lighting, especially when they are on dimmers. You can keep them bright while cleaning or entertaining, then lower them when it is time to relax. Table lamps, floor lamps, and wall lights add light at different heights and make the room feel inviting. Having these options lets you adjust the lighting to suit the moment.

The colour of the light matters too. Warm light generally feels more comfortable in living rooms and bedrooms, while brighter light may be helpful for detailed tasks. If a room feels gloomy, you may need light in a particular corner rather than a brighter bulb overhead.

Natural light still deserves attention in winter. Notice whether furniture or heavy window coverings block the daylight you have. A mirror can help reflect light into a room, but its placement matters. It should reflect a view or a well-lit part of the space, rather than an awkward corner.

You do not need to replace every fixture at once. Start with the room you use most on a November evening. Try adjusting the pot lights and turning on a lamp where you need one. Notice how the space changes. The best lighting plan grows from the way you live in your home.

If you are planning a lighting update, a home renovation, or a new build, we would love to help you create a home that works beautifully for the way you live.
