As an air duct cleaning professional, one of the things I remind homeowners every fall is simple: before you spend the winter with your heating system running day after day, take a moment to think about what’s inside your ductwork.
Your HVAC system works hard to keep your home comfortable. Every time it runs, air travels through your ductwork and into the rooms where you live, work and sleep. Over time, dust, dirt, pet hair, pollen and other debris can accumulate inside the system. When there is significant buildup, some of those particles can potentially be redistributed throughout the home as air circulates.
That’s one reason fall can be a great time to have your ductwork inspected. Once winter arrives, windows and doors generally stay closed, and we rely more heavily on our heating systems. Having your ducts and HVAC components checked before the heating season can help you identify accumulated debris and address other maintenance concerns before your system is working overtime.
Clean ductwork can also contribute to a more comfortable home. While duct cleaning isn’t a cure-all for indoor air quality and doesn’t replace regular HVAC maintenance, removing substantial amounts of accumulated debris can help keep the air distribution system cleaner. This can be especially worth considering in homes with pets, after remodeling or construction, or when you notice excessive dust around vents.
Another question homeowners often ask is how frequently their ducts should be cleaned. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. Some homes may go many years between cleanings, while others may benefit from more frequent attention depending on household conditions and HVAC use. A professional inspection is often the best place to start.
I also encourage homeowners to remember the basics: change HVAC filters regularly, keep supply and return vents clear, and schedule routine heating-system maintenance. These simple steps work together with a clean duct system to help your HVAC equipment operate as it should.
Winter preparation doesn’t have to be complicated. A little preventative attention now can help you head into the colder months with greater confidence that your heating system and air distribution system are ready for the season ahead.
From my perspective, that’s what good duct cleaning is really about: helping homeowners take better care of their homes, one breath—and one heating season—at a time.
