Across our Monterey Peninsula communities—from the quiet lanes of Carmel to Pacific Grove and Monterey—neighborly trust and family connections define daily life. Unfortunately, sophisticated fraudsters often exploit those very values. Financial scams targeting older adults are evolving rapidly, moving beyond obvious spam emails into emotionally distressing schemes designed to create panic.
Among the fastest-growing threats are modernized grandparent scams. Historically, these calls involved a muffled voice pleading, “Grandma, I’m in trouble, please don’t tell Mom.” Today, fraudsters utilize artificial intelligence and voice‑cloning technology. By sampling just seconds of audio from a public video or voicemail, scammers can mimic a grandchild’s natural tone, cadence, and inflection.
The caller fabricates an urgent crisis: an out‑of‑state accident, a sudden arrest or an emergency hospital bill. A fake “attorney” or “official” quickly takes over the phone, demanding thousands of dollars via wire transfer, payment apps or even cash courier. In high‑stress moments, natural protective instincts can overshadow caution.
Common red flags include:
- Manufactured panic: Pressure to act immediately before speaking with anyone else.
- Secrecy: Urging you to keep the situation hidden from family.
- Unusual payment methods: Requests for wire transfers, gift cards or courier pickups.
If a call feels unsettling, pause and hang up. Caller ID can be easily spoofed. Reach out directly to your grandchild or their parents on a known number or agree in advance on a simple family code word to verify identity.
A Helping Hand and Community Support
Navigating these situations doesn’t have to happen in isolation. Having a dedicated support team by your side—whether helping with daily elder care routines, companionship or simply offering an extra set of eyes—can bring tremendous comfort.

When something feels unfamiliar or raises concerns, our caregivers and care coordinators are there to offer a calm, judgment‑free sounding board, help talk through the situation and support families in sorting out what might be happening.
