‘Tis the season! Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and other celebrations are just around the corner, which means festive parties and family gatherings are on the calendar.
So, how do you host a successful holiday party without spending the entire evening in the kitchen or having every guest crowded around the same food and drink station?
With a little planning, you can create a party that feels effortless, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone—including you!
Create a Flow Throughout Your Home
You’ve picked a date, invited your friends, family, or co-workers, and added some festive decorations. Now it’s time to think about how your guests will move through your space.
Whether you have a large home or a small one, the key is to designate three or four different areas for food and drinks.
Most people put all the food in one central location and all the wine on one counter. Naturally, everyone ends up gathering in that same spot—usually the kitchen!
Instead, spread things out.
- The Kitchen: Hot Appetizers
The kitchen is the perfect place for anything hot: cooked items, soup, and Crock-Pot foods.
Set out your warm appetizers along with plates, napkins, and just a few wine glasses. Keeping this area simple will prevent it from becoming an all-night gathering spot.
- The Living Room: Charcuterie & Snacks
Find a small end table, coffee table, console, or even a few TV trays in your living room, near a fireplace, or beside a window.
Create a casual grazing station with a charcuterie board (more on that below), chips and dip, small plates and napkins, and a few more wine glasses.
This is also a great location for white wines, especially those that pair beautifully with cheese and lighter appetizers.
- The Dining Room or Foyer: Desserts & More
A dining room, foyer, or another open area is perfect for desserts.
Set out small plates, napkins, serving utensils, and a few additional wine glasses. This is also a great place for sparkling wine, eggnog, beer on ice, or ingredients for cocktails.
You might even make this the location for a mix of wines so guests have another reason to wander over.
The Secret? Make Guests Move & Mingle!
The idea is simple: create several little destinations throughout your home.
Put red wines in one area, whites in another, appetizers in several locations, and desserts somewhere else. Suddenly, guests naturally circulate throughout the house.
They’ll move from station to station, discover different foods and wines, and—most importantly—interact with more people.
Easy & Delicious Appetizer Ideas
There are endless possibilities when it comes to appetizers. Here are just a few easy, delicious ideas that look festive without requiring hours of preparation.
Butternut Squash Soup
This is an especially wonderful choice for Thanksgiving and cooler-weather gatherings.
Heat your favorite butternut squash soup and serve it in small bowls or ramekins. Add a drizzle of olive oil and a small dollop of feta cheese.
That’s it!
For an extra touch, serve a small crostini alongside each bowl.
Crab-Topped Crostini
Top toasted crostini with a warm crab-and-cheese spread and serve while warm.
You can also bake crab- or cheese-stuffed mushrooms for another easy, crowd-pleasing option.
Build a Simple Charcuterie Board
A beautiful charcuterie board doesn’t have to be complicated.
Choose three cheeses:
- One soft cheese, such as triple-cream Brie or fresh chèvre
- An aged Gouda
- Manchego
Cut the cheeses in different shapes—perhaps cubes for one and triangles or strips for another. The variety makes the board look more interesting and inviting.
Then add two different salamis, crackers, olives, and nuts. Place a small knife beside the soft cheese and a little glass filled with toothpicks or bamboo picks for the other items.
Simple, colorful, and easy!
Festive Skewers
For an appetizer that requires almost no cooking, try small skewers with melon, prosciutto, and a cube of cheese.
Or make Caprese skewers with cherry tomato, fresh basil, a mozzarella ball, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. They’re delicious, colorful, and have a wonderfully festive presentation.
Don’t Forget the Wine!
Here’s one little secret: some of your guests will probably bring Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
So why not offer something a little different?
For reds, try a Spanish wine such as Rioja or Can Blau. Both are wonderfully food-friendly, medium-bodied, smooth, and delicious with a variety of appetizers.
For white wine, a blend can be an excellent choice. Something along the lines of a Chenin Blanc–Viognier blend or a Rhône-style blend such as Coquille Blanc can offer something different while still being approachable and food-friendly.
And, of course, have something bubbly!
Whether it’s Champagne, Cava, or another sparkling wine, bubbles are always appropriate for a festive gathering. They make an occasion feel special and are perfect for welcoming guests or even for desserts.
The Bottom Line
A successful holiday party doesn’t have to mean complicated recipes, expensive ingredients, or hours spent in the kitchen. With just a little planning—and on almost any budget—you can create a warm, festive gathering that your guests will enjoy and, most importantly, you’ll actually have time to enjoy it, too!
Happy Holidays!
