How to Be Ready for the Holidays: Cleaning Tips From a 25-Year Pro

Every November, my phone starts ringing. Thanksgiving is a few weeks out, family is flying in, and somebody just noticed the stain by the sofa that’s been there since August.

I’ve been cleaning carpets and furniture around Savannah and Skidaway Island since 2001, and the holiday rush hasn’t changed much. People want the house to feel good before the guests show up. Here’s what’s worth doing before the company arrives.

Do the big stuff first

Decorating comes after cleaning. It’s tempting to put up the tree first, but you don’t want to move a fully dressed room around later. Get the carpets, upholstery, and tile done, then bring out the decorations.

Carpet holds more than you think

Most of what’s in your carpet doesn’t show. Dirt, dust, and everyday buildup settle deep into the fibers, and regular vacuuming only reaches so far. A deep cleaning pulls out what’s embedded, and the difference is usually bigger than people expect.

Don’t forget the furniture

Sofas and chairs are where guests actually sit, and they’re often the most overlooked surface in the house. Upholstery picks up body oils, spills, and pet dander over time. If it’s been a couple of years, it’s probably due.

Tile and grout can age a room

Grout darkens slowly, so you stop noticing it. Then a visitor stands in your entryway or kitchen and it’s the first thing they see. Cleaning it brings back the original color of the floor, and older tile needs a gentler approach.

Pet accidents need the right treatment

If you have a dog or cat, you know the story. Covering up a pet stain doesn’t solve it, because the odor sticks around in the padding. These spots need a treatment that actually breaks down the source. And whatever products get used in your home, make sure they’re safe around kids and animals.

Rugs and textiles matter too

Area rugs and fabric pieces tend to make a room feel warm and lived in. They take a lot of foot traffic and deserve the same attention as the carpet.

Ask questions before you hire anyone

Whoever you call, ask how they handle your specific flooring or fabric, and what they’ll do about a problem stain. A good company will answer plainly and won’t promise miracles. Honest communication matters more to me than any sales pitch. If something can’t be fully removed, I’ll tell you up front.

Why neighbors matter

Diamond has been fortunate to have been named the “Best Flooring and Upholstery Cleaning Company“ and I’m proud of that. But most of my work in The Landings still comes from one neighbor telling another. That’s how a local business should grow, and it’s why I show up on time and take care with every job.

Book early

The weeks before Thanksgiving and Christmas fill up fast. If you want your carpets, furniture, and floors ready before the guests arrive, call soon.

Then you can spend the holidays enjoying your family instead of staring at the stain.
