Designing a Home That Feels Like You—Inside and Out

Whenever we start a new project, we’re not thinking about paint colors or furniture right away—we’re thinking about you. Your home should feel like an extension of who you are, and that includes not just the rooms inside, but how those rooms connect to the architecture and the world outside your windows. Our process is less about following trends and more about creating a space that feels deeply personal, connected, and truly yours.

Step One: Getting to Know You (and Your Home’s Bones)

Before we ever talk about style, we want to hear your story. We love asking clients to walk me through a typical day—how you start your mornings, where you like to relax, how you entertain. Do you enjoy coffee on a sunny deck? Do you want your kitchen to open directly to the garden? These details help us understand how your home should function and how the interiors can work in harmony with the architecture and surrounding landscape.

If we’re working with an existing home, we spend time exploring each room, noting how the light shifts, where the views pull you, and how the layout frames (or hides) the outdoors. For both new builds and renovations, we work closely with our firm’s architects and landscape architects—considering how windows, doors, and sightlines can create a seamless relationship between inside and out.

Step Two: Finding Inspiration in Both the Interior and Exterior

This is where we dream together. We’ll pull fabrics, images, and even incorporate your keepsakes in a way that reflects your vision and personality—but we’re also looking to your home’s architecture and its setting for inspiration.

If you have a contemporary home with clean lines, we might echo that in streamlined furniture and simple, natural materials. If your garden is filled with wild, colorful blooms, we might weave those hues into a rug or throw pillows so the palette feels connected. Sometimes it’s as simple as aligning an indoor seating area with a favorite tree outside, so every glance is a pleasure.

Step Three: Shaping a Cohesive Vision

Once we’ve gathered ideas, we start shaping them into something unified. We create a palette of colors, textures, and materials that feel consistent from the front door to the backyard gate. We think about balance—soft textiles that invite you to stay awhile, natural wood that echoes the trees outside, stone that mirrors the garden path.

“A space should feel natural—like everything belongs, without trying too hard”, says S-Squared Design Manager Jackie Budidharma.  “When the materials and details flow from one room to the next and connect with what’s outside, that’s when a house really starts to feel like home.”

We also consider how to make transitions feel effortless. Maybe a living room spills onto a deck through big glass doors, with the same wood or stone tile used inside and out. Or perhaps the kitchen window frames a particular view, so we design the interior lighting and finishes to make that view shine even more.

Step Four: Collaborating Across Disciplines

Bringing the plan to life means working closely with the talented designers in our firm, as well as the skilled builders who execute our designs. Together, we make sure the materials, sightlines, and proportions feel intentional.

Notes S-Squared Project Manager Alivia Mountford, “Our team and the builders are in constant dialogue, refining every angle and finish so the final experience feels effortless and true to the design intent and client’s experience.”

It might mean aligning a window seat with a morning sunbeam, or designing an outdoor dining area that feels like a natural extension of the indoor kitchen.

We love this stage—it’s where we bridge worlds, turning a house, its interior, and its landscape into one unified experience.

Step Five: Installation and the Final Touches

Installation is the most exciting day—the vision finally comes to life. We place furniture, hang art, style bookshelves, and adjust lighting. But we also step outside, making sure the interior flows into the outdoor spaces the way we intended. That might mean positioning a lounge chair so it captures both a cozy fireplace view inside and a beautiful garden view outside.

Styling is that finishing layer where warmth happens. Maybe it’s an heirloom vase on the dining table filled with flowers from your own garden, or a woven throw that echoes the earthy tones of your patio. The goal is to make the whole property—inside and out—feel like one story.

The Heart of the Process

At the end of the day, good design is about connection—between you and your home, between the architecture and the landscape, between beauty and function.

The best compliment we can receive isn’t, “This looks like a magazine,” but, “This feels like us.” Because when every detail—from the front walk to the living room—works together, your home becomes more than a place to live. It becomes a place to truly belong!
