Providing Aftercare: Support Beyond the Service

The death care industry has existed for thousands of years and has undergone significant evolution over time. What was once viewed as a strictly solemn gathering has grown into an opportunity to both grieve a loss and celebrate a life well lived. While funeral practices continue to change, one thing remains constant: the importance of aftercare. Aftercare refers to the support that continues after the funeral service has concluded and when families begin to navigate their grief on their own.

At Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, our role extends beyond the day of the service. We are committed to supporting families long after the funeral has taken place. Throughout the year, we host community events designed to foster connection and healing. These include our back-to-school supply event for families we have served and our annual Night of Remembrance, where families are invited to gather for dinner and a prayer service honoring their loved ones. These moments allow us to stay connected and remind families that our support does not end when the funeral does.

Aftercare does not only come from a funeral home; it can also be provided by friends, neighbors, and loved ones. Grief is a personal journey that may take weeks, months, or even years, and everyone experiences it differently. Some individuals may want to talk about their loved one often, while others may prefer quiet companionship. Patience, understanding, and presence are essential forms of care.

Providing aftercare can be as simple as checking in regularly, listening without judgment, or offering practical support such as meals, errands, or household help. Small, consistent gestures can make a meaningful difference during a difficult time. No matter how aftercare is offered, what matters most is compassion and consistency—allowing individuals to feel their emotions while reminding them they are not alone on their journey.
