What About Ice and Snow Sliding Off a Metal Roof?

Standing seam metal roofs have become increasingly popular in South Jersey for their durability, clean lines, and long lifespan. One of their biggest wintertime benefits is how easily they shed snow and ice, which reduces heavy buildup and excess weight on the roof. However, in snowy conditions, that same smooth surface can allow large sheets of snow to slide off all at once. While this might sound concerning, it’s a well-understood characteristic of metal roofing and one that’s easily managed with proper planning.

Unlike asphalt shingles, which tend to hold snow in place, metal panels warm quickly when the sun comes out or when the temperature rises. As a result, snow and ice can suddenly release and slide downward, sometimes landing near walkways, entry doors, landscaping, or gutters.

So, what is the solution?

To address sliding snow and ice, roofing professionals use snow retention systems designed specifically for metal roofs. These systems don’t stop snow entirely; instead, they help control how it melts and moves, allowing it to release gradually and safely.

There are two common approaches. Individual snow guards, which are small, low-profile devices installed in a pattern across the roof. Snow guards help break up snow as it begins to slide and can be used on smaller roof areas, like over porches, or on the home’s larger main roof. Snow rails, on the other hand, run horizontally along the roof seams and hold the snow blanket in place until it melts evenly. Rails are typically used on larger roof sections where more snow accumulation is expected.

At Bonner Master Roofing, we install snow retention systems that attach directly to the standing seams, without drilling through the panels, which maintains the roof’s watertight integrity. The systems can also be color-matched to blend seamlessly with the roof for a clean, understated look.

“In historic towns like Haddonfield, we always consider both safety and appearance,” says Chuck Bonner, President of Bonner Master Roofing. “Snow retention systems can be designed to blend into the roofline, protecting people below without distracting from the character of the home.”

With the right snow retention in place, homeowners can safely and confidently enjoy the beauty and performance of a metal roof all winter long.  For more helpful information about protecting your home this winter, be sure to read our latest blog, “Protecting Your Roof During the Winter Months” at www.bonnerroof.com/blog
