Think Pain is a Natural Part of Getting Old? Think Again.

One of the most common things I hear from patients is, “I thought this was just part of getting older.” While our bodies naturally change with age, living with ongoing pain is not something you simply have to accept.

Many people experience back pain, neck pain, joint pain, or nerve pain and assume it’s an unavoidable consequence of aging. As a result, they often delay seeking treatment, limit activities they once enjoyed, or rely on temporary solutions that don’t address the underlying problem. The good news is that there are effective options available.

Interventional pain management is a specialized approach that focuses on identifying the source of pain and treating it using minimally invasive procedures. Rather than simply masking symptoms with medication, interventional pain management targets the structures causing discomfort. Depending on a patient’s condition, treatments may include image-guided injections, nerve ablations, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulators, or other procedures designed to reduce pain, improve function, and help patients return to the activities they love.

The goal isn’t just pain relief; it’s restoring quality of life. Whether it’s playing with grandchildren, enjoying a round of golf, gardening, traveling, or simply walking without discomfort, improving mobility and function can make a tremendous difference in daily life.

Every patient is unique, which is why treatment should never be one-size-fits-all. A thorough evaluation that includes a full physical assessment and diagnostic imaging allows us to understand what’s causing the pain.  Together, we develop an individualized plan based on each person’s needs, goals, and lifestyle.

If you’ve been living with pain, don’t assume it’s “just aging.” Pain is your body’s way of telling you something deserves attention. Seeking an evaluation doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll need surgery or long-term medication. In many cases, minimally invasive treatments can provide significant relief and help you regain your independence.

Growing older should mean gaining experiences and wisdom without pain. If you’re being kept from living the life you want, know that you have options, and it’s never too late to explore them.
