Working with Nature
At Vintage Tree Care, we see arboriculture as an intersection of art and science, aligning with the essential care of our biological system. We understand trees not only facilitate the environment we live in and touch our human spirit, they also serve as a mechanism for other biological processes and functions, as an environment that houses and offers life to other plant and animal species. One group of species we see and interact with are birds—those vibrant, soaring members of our local environment. Here are just a few of the considerations given to how Vintage Tree Care approaches birds and the trees we care for.
Bird Nesting Activity and Tree Care
- Pre-Work Evaluation: Performing a site evaluation is invaluable, helping us get a true sense of the life within the tree canopy. We utilize binoculars to assist in locating birds and identifying their current activities, making sure we don’t accidentally disturb a home in progress.
- Habitat Value: Bird types and populations are dependent on habitat location and quality. Understanding the value of a habitat is crucial to determining bird presence and/or activity. We consider each tree a unique ecosystem and appreciate the distinct species that call it home.
- Nesting season: Since birds nest at certain times of the year—often coinciding with our busy season—we take great care to determine the presence of nesting activity before beginning any work. Our goal is to protect the next generation of birds.
- Surveys: Vintage Tree Care conducts thorough surveys upon arrival and ongoing throughout the project, just to be certain that no new activity has begun. It is also beneficial to perform surveys prior to the scheduled work execution date, giving us a head start in planning around nature’s schedule.
- Understanding Bird Behavior: Understanding bird calls and behaviors is important for determining if they are engaged in mating, nest construction, or caring for their young. A stressed or warning call is a clear sign for us to pause and assess the situation, putting the well-being of the birds first.
- Adjusting the Schedule: When nesting activity is a concern, Vintage Tree Care considers altering the timing of tree care. We prioritize the timing of care for specific areas or tree types to accommodate nesting cycles, ensuring we complete necessary work only after the fledglings have safely left the nest.
Vintage Tree Care recognizes the critical role birds play in preserving our environment and ecosystems. Therefore, we hold the living environment surrounding the trees we care for in high regard and aim to conduct our operations in an environmentally ethical manner, working alongside nature, not against it.
