Your Heart Is Calling…Will You Answer?

Back to Articles

February is often celebrated as the month of love. A time to honor connection, relationships, and the people who fill our lives with meaning. But it also marks American Heart Month, an important reminder that the very organ that allows us to love and live, our heart, needs our care and attention more than ever.

As a women’s health physician practicing here in our beautiful Lake Las Vegas community, I see a powerful truth every day: heart disease is the number one cause of death in women. It claims more lives than all cancers combined, yet many women don’t recognize the signs until it’s too late.

Midlife brings hormonal changes, stress, caregiving responsibilities, and the pressure to always be “on.” These layers can quietly affect our heart without us noticing. Women often don’t present with dramatic chest pain — instead, the red flags can be subtle: unusual fatigue, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, back or jaw discomfort, or a simple inner knowing. “I just don’t feel like myself.” Listening to these whispers matters.

What makes Lake Las Vegas special is that we live in a community built for heart health. Our mornings begin with sunrise walks along the water. Paddleboarders glide through peaceful coves. Neighbors gather for yoga, pickleball, or laughter over coffee at The Village. Connection, movement, and joy. These are not luxuries, they are medicine.

This month, I encourage every woman reading this to place her hand over her heart and ask: Am I following my heart – in health and in life?

Maybe it’s time to schedule your annual wellness visit, learn your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers, join a walking group, or say yes to a hobby, or dream, you’ve been putting off.

Maybe it’s time to finally put yourself back on your own priority list.

Your heart isn’t just beating . It’s calling. May February be the month you choose to answer.

In health and happiness,

Dr. Diana Hoppe, OB-GYN — Lake Las Vegas Resident & Women’s Wellness Advocate
