5 Things Parents Should Know Before Their Child Sees an Orthodontist

As both an orthodontist and a new parent myself, I understand how many questions come up when it’s time to think about braces or aligners for your child. Orthodontic care is about much more than straight teeth; it’s about guiding proper growth and setting kids up for a lifetime of confident smiles. Here are five things every parent should know before their child’s first orthodontic visit.

1. Age 7 is the magic number.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first checkup by age 7. At this age, kids typically have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, which helps us see how the bite is developing and whether early guidance might help.

2. Early exams rarely mean early treatment.

Most children don’t need braces right away. Many simply benefit from observation visits once or twice a year. These early checkups give parents peace of mind and allow orthodontists to plan for the best timing down the road.

3. Some small steps make a big difference.

For a small percentage of kids, early intervention can help prevent bigger problems later. Simple treatments like expanders or space maintainers can guide jaw growth or make room for adult teeth.

4. Comfort and confidence matter.

Your child’s first orthodontic visit sets the tone for how they’ll feel about dental care in general. I always aim to make that first experience fun, positive, and stress-free. We want kids to leave excited about taking care of their smile!

5. Every smile (and family) is unique.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to orthodontic timing or treatment. Some kids need early guidance, while others don’t need treatment until their teens. The most important thing is having a trusted professional keep an eye on their growth.

At Carpinello Orthodontics, my father, Dr. Paul Carpinello, and I are proud to provide personalized, family focused orthodontic care. We combine decades of trusted experience with modern, cutting-edge techniques to create beautiful, lasting smiles for every age. Our goal is simple: to help our community smile with confidence and feel great about the journey getting there. A simple visit around age 7 can give you peace of mind and set your child on the path to a healthy, confident smile for life.
