A New Pathway for Families Navigating Aging and Special Needs

Back to Articles

Across Collin County and the greater DFW area, families are living longer … and with that longevity comes a set of complex questions that often go unspoken.

What happens when aging parents begin to need support themselves, yet are still caring for an adult child with special needs? Where do families turn when traditional senior living conversations don’t fully address this reality?

A new local initiative, Special Edition Pathways™, was developed to meet families at this intersection.

Developed by Traci Duff, Senior Care Advisor with Assisted Living Locators, Special Edition Pathways™ was created to support families navigating aging parents who also have adult children with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). The initiative blends professional expertise in senior living with lived experience, offering families a meaningful new option for inclusive planning.

Duff’s connection to this work is both professional and deeply personal. In addition to her years of experience guiding families through senior living decisions, she is also the mother of Tyler, 38, her adult son with Down Syndrome.

Like many parents in similar situations, Duff understands firsthand the questions that arise with time: How do I plan for my own future while ensuring my child is safe, supported, and connected long after I’m gone?

Special Edition Pathways™ was designed to help families begin addressing those questions earlier … before a crisis forces rushed decisions.

Rather than starting with placement decisions, the program emphasizes connection and education first.

Families interested in the initiative begin by completing a brief interest form, which allows the program to better understand their unique circumstances and timing.

Experiential Learning

From there, families are invited to participate in small group Zoom conversations designed to foster connection, shared experience, and open dialogue about needs, concerns, and future planning.

An important component of the program is its emphasis on experiential learning. Families are on “Pathway Tours” to select senior living communities, often including a shared meal or activity.

These experiences allow families to observe daily life, staff interactions, and community culture … offering a more genuine sense of whether a setting may be the right fit. The goal is education and clarity, not pressure.

A defining feature of Special Edition Pathways™ is its focus on continuity. The initiative explores senior living models that may allow an adult child with special needs to move into a community alongside their aging parent and remain there long term, following the same guidelines as all residents, with possible flexibility around age requirements when entering with a parent or legal guardian.

Special Edition Pathways™ is not a Medicaid-based program. It is designed for families who are private pay, have long-term care insurance, or may utilize VA benefits. This transparency allows families to explore options that align with their financial planning early in the process.

As the initiative launches locally, Special Edition Pathways™ reflects a growing recognition that aging is not an isolated experience … it is part of a larger family ecosystem.

For families balancing care for both themselves and their adult children, this program offers a new pathway forward: one rooted in compassion, clarity, and trusted guidance.

Special Edition Pathways™ is currently taking shape in Collin County and the DFW area, with plans to grow through community partnerships and family participation –  offering families a thoughtful new option to consider as they plan for what comes next.
