Beyond Aesthetics: The Serious Implications of Nail Fungus
Nail fungus, medically known as onychomycosis, is a widespread and persistent condition affecting millions of people worldwide. Characterized by thickened, discolored nails, nail fungus can be both unsightly and uncomfortable. Despite its prevalence, nail fungus often goes untreated or undertreated, leading to discomfort, embarrassment, and even complications. In this article, we’ll delve into the causes, symptoms, treatment options, and preventive measures for nail fungus, shedding light on this common yet often overlooked condition.
Understanding Nail Fungus
Nail fungus is typically caused by fungal organisms known as dermatophytes, which thrive in warm, moist environments. These fungi can enter the nail through small cracks or breaks in the skin, often as a result of wearing tight-fitting shoes, walking barefoot in public areas such as swimming pools or gyms, or sustaining a nail injury. Once inside the nail, the fungus can multiply and spread, leading to characteristic symptoms such as thickening, discoloration, and brittleness of the nails.
Treatment Options at Forward Foot & Ankle Center
Topical Antifungal Treatments: Topical antifungal medications may be prescribed to apply directly to the affected nails. Most topical antifungals DO NOT penetrate the nail, but we do offer better options at our office.
Oral Antifungal Medications: Prescription oral antifungal medications are often effective in treating nail fungus, as they work from within to target the fungal infection. These may cause several side effects, so many things are considered before prescribing them.
Laser Therapy: Laser therapy is a safe and effective treatment option for nail fungus that utilizes focused laser energy to penetrate the nail and destroy the fungal infection. This non-invasive procedure is virtually painless and requires no downtime, allowing patients to resume their normal activities immediately afterward.
Surgical Intervention: In severe cases of nail fungus where conservative treatments have been unsuccessful, and the nail is causing pain or further infections, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove the affected nail or part of it. This is done with the outmost care, ensuring optimal outcomes for our patients.
Preventive Measures to Minimize Recurrence
Prevention is key in reducing the risk of nail fungus recurrence and maintaining healthy nails in the long term.
Proper Foot Hygiene: Keep your feet clean and dry, and wash them regularly with soap and water. Dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal growth.
Wear Proper Footwear: Choose shoes that allow your feet to breathe and provide adequate ventilation. Avoid tight-fitting shoes and opt for moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet dry.
Practice Good Nail Care: Trim your nails straight across and avoid cutting them too short to reduce the risk of nail trauma. Additionally, avoid sharing nail clippers or other nail care tools to prevent the spread of fungal infections. DO NOT remove or push your nail cuticles!!!
