Choosing the Right Path

Construction. Renovation. Additions.

Those are scary words to a lot of people, and one thing is clear when you start to consider everything. Your world is about to be filled with a sprinkle of change and smidge of sawdust.

So, let’s start at the beginning. You took the big first step and bought a house, or you finally decided to do that renovation in your house. Your next task is just as big…taking that house and making it a home. Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen overnight and even more than that, doesn’t happen without work, expertise, and attention to detail.

A “remodeler” can be an excellent choice for a lot of homeowners, particularly those who already have plans drawn up, finalized product selections, and a clear understanding of color and finishes, and simply need a professional to execute the construction and labor.

Within the renovation process, it’s important to recognize that there is a distinct difference between the design process and the construction process. While inherently intertwined, they both require different skill sets and without a company that specializes in both, you will need two separate entities to take care of both pieces of the project. If you prefer a more segmented approach, addressing design and construction as separate stages, a remodeler may be right for you.

On the other hand, if you are at square one, and prefer dealing with one point of contact and the flexibility of working with one company, a “Design-Build Contractor” may be a great fit for you. Benefits of design + build companies are the ability to create floor plans, present you with a wide range of design choices and products options, and eliminate delays because there is no segmentation between the design + construction pieces of the project. You have one single point of contact throughout the entire process, so decisions will be communicated to other team members without confusion or delay between a designer and a contractor.

The bottom line is this: the choice will really come down to whatever is right for your space and your personality. The opportunities to design and build are vast and so is your imagination. So take the facts, understand your options, and make the choice that takes your home to the next level (even if you’re not adding a second story.)

Here at Jil Young Designs we are a “design-build contractor”, formally trained in interior design, certified color expert, and a licensed general contractor. That means we design it, build it and make sure your vision comes together seamlessly.
