Jewelry Care After a Summer of Sun, Sand, and Saltwater

Summer is made for making memories. Family vacations, afternoons by the pool, weekends at the beach, and countless celebrations. While your jewelry is often part of those special moments, months of sun, sand, sunscreen and saltwater can quietly take a toll on them. As summer winds down, now is the perfect time to give those treasured pieces a little extra attention so they’re ready to shine for every season ahead.

Believe it or not, some of our favorite summer activities aren’t so kind to jewelry. Chlorine in pools and hot tubs can gradually weaken gold over time, while saltwater and sand can dull finishes, scratch precious metals, and even find their way into stone settings. Gardening, yard work, home improvement projects, and even trips to the gym can also put unnecessary wear and tear on rings, bracelets, necklaces, and chains. A little prevention now can help keep your jewelry looking beautiful for years to come.

Another common culprit is sunscreen, lotion, and bug spray. While they’re great for protecting your skin, they can leave behind a buildup that quickly hides the brilliance of your diamonds and gemstones. If your jewelry has lost some of its sparkle after a busy summer, don’t worry, it often just needs a little TLC.

Here are a few easy habits that can help protect your favorite pieces:

  • Remove jewelry before swimming, relaxing in a hot tub, gardening, exercise or heavy lifting.
  • Apply sunscreen, lotions, and bug spray and give them ample time to dry before putting your jewelry on.
  • Store pieces separately when traveling to help prevent scratches and tangles.

If your jewelry has been with you on all your summer adventures, now is also a great time for a professional cleaning and inspection. Even if everything looks fine on the surface, everyday wear can loosen stones, wear down prongs, or weaken clasps without you noticing. Catching those small issues early can often prevent a much more expensive repair or the loss of a treasured gemstone.
