A dementia diagnosis does not only affect the person receiving it. It impacts the entire family. As individuals and caregivers navigate changes in memory, communication, and daily life, many experience isolation, stress, and uncertainty. Dementia cafés were created to help address these challenges by offering education, connection, and meaningful engagement in a welcoming setting.

Dementia cafés first emerged in the late 1990s in Europe as informal gatherings for people living with dementia and their caregivers. The goal was to provide a stigma-free space where participants could learn, socialize, and feel supported. Over time, the concept expanded internationally and has become a key element of dementia-friendly communities throughout the United States.

Unlike clinical support groups, dementia cafés focus on community, shared experiences, and practical tools that improve daily life. They welcome individuals living with dementia, family caregivers, professionals, and anyone interested in learning more about cognitive change.

Dementia Friendly America is a national organization dedicated to building communities where people living with dementia are understood, respected, and supported. The organization helps guide communities and organizations in creating dementia-friendly initiatives, including dementia cafés.

Through education, structure, and best practices, Dementia Friendly America helps organizations develop inclusive programs that foster understanding, reduce stigma, and provide ongoing support for families impacted by dementia.

For family caregivers, dementia cafés offer relief from isolation and an opportunity to connect with others who understand the caregiving journey. Caregivers gain practical strategies they can use at home, while individuals living with dementia benefit from continued engagement and social connection that supports quality of life.

Right at Home Woodstock proudly sponsors Memory Grounds, a dementia café serving Cherokee County, Georgia. Memory Grounds meets on the second Friday of each month at 2:00 PM at the Canton Senior Center, located at 1001 Univeter Road, Canton, Georgia 30115.

Since October 2025, Memory Grounds has welcomed individuals living with dementia, family caregivers, and community members who want to learn more about dementia. Each session features a guest speaker and an interactive activity designed for people with dementia and their caregivers to participate in together.

Topics at Memory Grounds have included art therapy, exercises that support neuroplasticity, tapping into sensory memories, and the use of compassionate touch to strengthen connection. These experiences provide practical tools families can use at home to improve engagement and reduce stress or anxiety.

Memory Grounds reflects Right at Home’s belief that people living with dementia retain abilities and deserve opportunities for meaningful interaction and connection. Dementia cafés like Memory Grounds play an important role in creating supportive, informed, and inclusive communities.
