March Gem of the Month: Aquamarine
Aquamarine, March’s birthstone, has been treasured for thousands of years and long associated with the sea. Its name comes from the Latin aqua marina, meaning “water of the sea,” a reflection of its tranquil blue-green hues. Ancient sailors believed aquamarine was a protective talisman, carrying it on voyages to calm waves and ensure safe passage.
Throughout history, aquamarine has symbolized calm, clarity, and honest communication. It was thought to soothe anxiety, quiet the mind, and help the wearer speak with confidence and truth. In medieval Europe, it was even believed to counteract poison and promote reconciliation, strengthening harmony in relationships.
As a member of the Beryl family, which also includes emerald, aquamarine is valued for its exceptional clarity and signature sea-blue color. Colors range from delicate pale blue to gentle blue-green, with the clearest stones most sought after. Durable enough for everyday wear, aquamarine is a beautiful choice for rings, pendants, and earrings. The cool, tranquil tones complement both white and yellow gold, lending effortless elegance to classic and contemporary designs alike.
