Movement March

Back to Articles

It’s been a long winter of damp, dreary, short days—but we’re finally turning the corner. Spring is on the horizon, bringing fresh energy, and renewed hope that we’ll soon be comfortably and joyfully enjoying those sunnier days ahead.

But this transition period can be tough on motivation, especially when it comes to fitness. If your fitness motivation has been a bit “meh,” you’re not alone. That’s why our focus for March is simple and achievable: Channel your inner Dory and Just Keep Moving.

Welcome to Movement March!

Here are a few simple tips to keep the steps going and help “march” you from your New Year’s resolutions into sunshine-filled activities.

According to Harvard Medical School, among 8,000 people followed for 10 years, those who did light activity instead of sitting for 30 minutes each day had a 17% lower risk of dying in that period, even if they split up that half-hour of activity into periods as brief as a minute each. So, Every Step Counts!

 If your schedule has you sitting a lot, try setting a timer on your phone. Decide how often you can, or want to, get up and move around for a few minutes. Optimally, walk around once per hour. Or if you want to be like me, double dip on benefits and drink a ton of water. You’ll soon find you will need to excuse yourself regularly to run to the restroom.

  • Skip the hunt for the perfect parking spot. It’s tempting to circle for that “perfect” close spot. But by parking at the end of the row, you can actually save time, save stress, and score some bonus steps before you even hit the store.
  • Take advantage of phone time. My husband is fidgety. While he talks, he is pacing back and forth, in and out. It kind of drives me nuts. But guess what, he’s not a heavy guy. Those little laps can sneak in a surprising number of steps. I use Bluetooth earbuds for longer conversations. You can keep the conversation going while knocking out small chores—laundry, dishes, filing paperwork, you name it. You’ll stay moving, stay productive, and still be fully part of the conversation. Extra steps, fewer to-dos—win-win.
  • And speaking of chores… try being less efficient. If you’re like me and love to streamline everything, mix it up! Instead of grabbing the mail while bringing the trash can back from the road, make it two trips. Twice the steps, same results. When it comes to movement, efficiency isn’t always your friend.
  • Got your steps in but want more bang for your buck? Try a weighted vest and let your daily walks and chores do the heavy lifting (literally). They’re affordable and available in weights that make sense for your body and health. It’s an easy way to turn normal movement into extra calorie burn, strength gains, and cardiovascular benefits.

And most importantly, hang in there! Keep moving! Warm, sunny days lie ahead!
