Prep Academy Tutors Hosts Small Group College Advising Workshops for Sophomores and Juniors

On March 24, Prep Academy Tutors will host part two of a two-part small-group college advising workshop for sophomores and their parents, and on March 26, they will host part two of a college advising workshop for juniors and their families. These small-group workshops will be hosted by Prep Academy’s directors, Vanessa O’Friel and Sarah Loader, and by college admissions counselor, Karen Rozanes.

The sophomore workshops focus on building a strong extracurricular profile in high school, creating a balanced college list, and identifying schools that are a good fit for a student. The junior workshops highlight a strategic guide to college visits and how visits shape a student’s application, plus the smart way to choose a college major and how majors, careers, and college admissions are connected.

Karen has been a college admissions counselor with Prep Academy Tutors for four years. Karen, Vanessa, and Sarah share a professional focus for a customized, personal approach to their work with students. Karen has over two decades of combined human resources and campus recruiting experience. As a dedicated college admissions counselor, Karen empowers high school students to discover and articulate their unique stories. She brings a wealth of insight into what colleges seek in their applicants. Karen gets to know each student individually, understanding their passions, strengths, and aspirations to help them uncover the narrative that truly sets them apart. Whether they’re embarking on their college journey or navigating the complexities of choosing a major, Karen provides tailored guidance every step of the way. By developing a strategic plan of action that aligns with their goals, Karen ensures that her students stand out in the competitive admissions process.

Karen participates in weekly conference calls to share and collect data from colleagues and universities. She also attends IECA (Independent Education Consultants Association) conferences to stay abreast of industry developments and tours new colleges each year.

Karen offers a comprehensive package for juniors that includes developing a personalized application strategy and timeline, creating a resume, honing extracurricular activities, conducting a thorough college search, building a balanced list of schools, selecting a major, and completing the Common App. Karen helps students stay on track throughout the entire application process.

Karen offers a sophomore package that includes developing a strategic plan to align extracurricular activities with academic development to maximize results. Karen assists with course selection, helps determine future college majors through interest exploration, and provides full support in finding competitive summer activities. Karen encourages all of her students to work with her during their sophomore year to get a head start on building a strong candidacy.

One of Karen’s Bronxville students from the class of 2026 recounts, “Karen has been absolutely amazing. She took the time to listen to our son and get a sense of who he is as a person and student. She helped him distill a list of schools and offered stellar suggestions for fine-tuning his story. I was so impressed by her system. The clear and concise directions, expectations, and timeline Karen laid out made managing the process so smooth. He never appeared overwhelmed as he navigated a very intense workload, essays, and deadlines. Karen’s vast experience and expertise turned what could have been a daunting and stressful period into a seamless one. As a parent, the relief in seeing my son navigate this process with confidence was invaluable.”

Some of Karen’s class of 2026 have been admitted to Cornell, NYU, Harvard, the University of Michigan, Tulane, the University of Texas at Austin, Penn State, Southern Methodist University, and others.
