Through the Lens at Herrington Lake

Back to Articles

March is a special time at Herrington Lake. The quiet stillness of winter begins to soften, the light lingers just a little longer each evening, and there’s a sense of anticipation in the air. The lake slowly comes back to life, and with it, so do the moments that make this community so meaningful.

As the photographer for Herrington Lake Living magazine, I’ve had the privilege of seeing this transition through my lens year after year. I’ve watched families grow, couples celebrate milestones, and neighbors create memories in places that feel like home. What I’ve learned is that photography here isn’t about perfection — it’s about presence.

One of the most powerful elements of photography at Herrington Lake is the light. In early spring, it has a softness that feels almost gentle. The sun sits lower in the sky, creating natural depth and warmth that flatters both the landscape and the people in it. Some of the most beautiful images I’ve ever taken weren’t planned around elaborate poses or locations — they happened simply because someone paused to enjoy the moment. A quiet walk along the shoreline, sitting together on the dock, or even standing in the yard as the sun begins to set can create images that feel timeless.

Many people worry about not knowing how to pose or feeling uncomfortable in front of the camera, but the truth is, the best photographs rarely come from perfectly posed moments. They come from connection. When people are relaxed — talking, laughing, or simply being together — their natural expressions tell the story far better than any pose ever could. My role as a photographer is often less about directing and more about observing, creating a space where people feel at ease enough to be themselves.

Clothing and setting also play an important role, especially in a place as naturally beautiful as Herrington Lake. Spring is the perfect time for soft, neutral colors and simple layers that complement the environment rather than compete with it. The lake itself provides the backdrop — calm water, early greenery, and open sky — and the goal is always to let those natural elements enhance the moment rather than distract from it.

What makes Herrington Lake truly special, though, isn’t just the scenery. It’s the people and the lives being lived here every day. Some of the most meaningful images I’ve captured weren’t taken during major milestones, but during ordinary days — families gathered on the porch, children playing in the yard, or couples simply enjoying the quiet beauty of where they live. These are the moments that, over time, become the most valuable.

As we move into a new season, my encouragement to this community is simple: don’t wait for a perfect occasion to capture your memories. The beauty of life at Herrington Lake is happening now, in the in-between moments that often pass too quickly. Whether through a professional session or a photo taken on your phone, preserving those memories allows you to hold onto them for years to come.

It is an honor to help tell the story of this community, one moment at a time. Herrington Lake is more than a place — it’s a collection of lives, memories, and connections that deserve to be remembered.
