At Home & About with John and Kim: Building Community Beyond Real Estate

Back to Articles

For many residents across Windsor Essex, John D’Alimonte and Kim Wheeler are familiar names in local real estate. Over the years, their work has naturally connected them with homeowners, investors, and families throughout the region. Recently, they introduced another way to stay in touch with that community through their monthly newsletter, At Home & About with John & Kim.

Although the idea had been discussed for years, it was only recently that the team decided to fully commit to launching it. With support from their social media manager, Susie Wright of Studio and Design, the newsletter was initially launched as a six month experiment to see how their audience would respond.

The results made the decision easy. The inspiration behind the newsletter was simple. Over the years, John and Kim have built many meaningful relationships through their work, and one of the hardest parts of the business is not always being able to stay connected with everyone as often as they would like. The newsletter helps bridge that gap, giving them a way to stay in touch while sharing useful and engaging information that readers genuinely look forward to each month.

“Our newsletter is something people want to be a part of, a layer of our relationship where communication is two-way, not just something they receive. Our clients hit reply like they would to any email from a friend. The connection is mutual” says Kim.

Subscribers come from across Windsor Essex County, not just Amherstburg. Anyone who signs up through their website can receive the newsletter, and some readers continue following it even after moving away from the area.

Unlike many real estate newsletters that focus strictly on listings or market reports, At Home & About with John & Kim covers a much broader mix of topics. Some editions include market statistics or home buying tips, while others highlight local events happening throughout Windsor Essex, including Amherstburg, Kingsville, and Lakeshore. They also share fun stories happening around the community and occasionally include glimpses from their personal lives.

The goal is to create something that people actually enjoy reading rather than feeling like they are simply receiving a sales message.

“It is more like a blog post,” they explained. “People do not have to feel like they are only signing up to hear about real estate.”

To keep things interesting, the team has also experimented with interactive content. In February, they introduced a trivia campaign where subscribers received a new question every Monday. Anyone who submitted a guess was entered into a draw for dinner prizes.

The response was immediate.

“We had a lot of people responding,” they said. “People were joking back and forth about their answers and having fun with it.”

Encouraged by the response, they plan to continue experimenting with interactive ideas, including future giveaways trivia, community-inspired Q&A, games and challenges and other fun ways for readers to participate

When the newsletter first launched, many subscribers even reached out directly.

“People would text us or call and say they got the newsletter and thought it was really cool,” they said.

Readers also frequently reply directly to the email or reach out through their business page to continue the conversation.

Even now, nearly a year later, engagement remains remarkably strong.

Beyond the newsletter itself, John and Kim also remain closely connected to the growth happening throughout the region. Through their work, they often see new businesses preparing to open their doors in town.

Recent additions generating local excitement include the relocation of Frate Street Food to 173 Sandwich Street South and Wild X Bins, now open at 227 Sandwich Street South. Stay tuned for more information regarding the opening of a new wine destination in downtown Amherstburg.

For John and Kim, initiatives like the newsletter simply reflect the same approach they have always taken in their work. Staying visible, staying engaged, and staying connected with the community they serve.
