Therapy dogs are specially trained to provide comfort, companionship, and emotional support in healthcare settings. Their calm demeanor and friendly presence can ease nervousness, lower stress, and create reassurance in unfamiliar environments.
In a dental office, these benefits are especially meaningful. Many patients experience anxiety at the dentist, and therapy dogs help create a calming atmosphere from the moment someone walks through the door. A few minutes spent petting a dog or focusing on their gentle presence can shift attention away from the sounds and sensations of treatment, making appointments more relaxing.
Therapy dogs are particularly effective with children. Young patients who feel uncertain about dental visits often respond immediately to a friendly dog. That interaction helps them relax, build trust with the dental team, and begin to associate the dentist with comfort rather than fear. For patients with special needs or sensory sensitivities, therapy dogs provide emotional grounding, helping make appointments smoother for both patients and providers.
At Massanutten Dental, two golden retrievers, Molly and Marco, are part of the team. Together, they balance each other perfectly—one calm and steady, the other playful and joyful, and both completely devoted to the people around them. Whether greeting patients in the waiting room or offering quiet comfort during appointments, their presence helps make the office welcoming and relaxed.
Molly, age 9, is a rescued golden retriever with a gentle, “grandma” personality. Calm and steady, she immediately puts people at ease and isn’t shy about asking for attention when she wants it, using soft vocalizations and expressive eyes.
Marco, age 6, is also a rescued golden retriever, full of bright, playful energy. He greets each day with enthusiasm, loves treats and pets, and has a special talent for sensing when someone needs a little extra comfort.
At its heart, dentistry is about helping patients feel comfortable and confident. Sometimes, that reassurance comes not only from skilled professionals, but also from the wagging tail, soft eyes, and warm presence of a therapy dog like Molly or Marco.
