Fake Spring in Minnesota: Is Your AC Ready?

Back to Articles

If you’ve lived in Minnesota for more than a year, you know exactly what “fake spring” is. It’s that magical week when the snow melts, everyone breaks out the grill, a few brave souls are already wearing shorts… and then winter comes roaring back like it forgot its keys.

While fake spring may not last, it is a good reminder that cooling season is right around the corner. Before the first stretch of hot, humid weather arrives, it’s a good time to check on the systems that keep your home comfortable and healthy.

Indoor Air Quality and Healthy Living

Most people assume the air outside is more polluted than the air inside their home. Surprisingly, studies show indoor air can often be 2–5 times more polluted than outdoor air. After a long winter with the windows closed, dust, allergens, and stale air can build up. Spring is a great time to check filtration, improve airflow, and make sure your HVAC system is ready for warmer weather.

Getting Your AC Ready

Air conditioners typically last 15–18 years, but like any mechanical system, they perform best with routine maintenance. Before the first hot day sneaks up on us, homeowners can do a few simple checks:

  • Clear leaves and debris from around the outdoor unit
  • Gently remove cottonwood or dust buildup
  • Replace your furnace filter
  • Test your thermostat to confirm cooling mode works

Don’t Forget the Sump Pump

Spring rains mean sump pumps start working overtime. The average lifespan of a sump pump is 7–10 years, so a quick inspection can prevent problems later.

  • Check the float switch
  • Test the battery backup
  • Inspect the discharge line to make sure it is sloping away from the house

If you’d rather have a professional take a look, the team at Waconia Comfort is here to help. With over 30 years of experience keeping Minnesota homes comfortable, we’re ready for whatever the seasons throw at us. Give us a call at 952-442-3473 to schedule service.
